THETA SIGMA PI
SORORITY
Theta Sigma Pi and all of its
member sisters are anxiously
awaiting some of the biggest
events on the sorority calendar.
Among the coming activities is
a Mother-Daughter Tea which has
been a rewarding occasion during
past years. It is at this informal
gathering that the girls can ac
quaint their mothers with the
feminine aspect of the Campus
and at the same time provide them
with an entertaining talent pro
gram conducted by a few of the
girls themselves. Tentative dates
for the tea are February 25 and
March 4.
Already, there is talk of the
forthcoming May Crowning, held
annually for the last three years
by the Sorority. The coming of
this festivity has, since its debut
at the Hazleton Campus, been
greeted with elaborate prepara
tions, anxious discussions, and
more than a twinge of excitement.

Report on S. G. A.
On Tuesday, January 23, 1962,
the Student Association of the
Hazleton Campus met with Pres
ident Richard Bertolini .presiding.
President Bertolini welcomed the
newly elected members: Carol
Marciniak and Richard Powell.
The newly elected officers were
also recognized. They are George
Wanko, Vice-President, and Glen
Schaefer, Treasurer.
The issue of attendance at the
0. S. G. A. conference, which will
be held at University Park on
February 9, was also discussed.
President suggested that Glenn
Schaeffer and George Wanko ac
company him to the conference.
The second issue under consid
eration is that of the purchase of
an F.M. tuner, which would be in
stalled in the present high-fidelity
system in use in the Student
Union Building. Ed Soltis quoted
prices on four F.M. tuners, one of
which will be selected for
installation.
Also under consideration, was
the possibility of allotting funds
to I.C.G. in order to subsidize the
annual trip of the organization to
the state convention at Harris
burg. However, under present cir
cumstances, President Bertolini
noted that while Student Govern
ment could not promise to under
take the entire sponsorship of this
trip, Student Government would
do everything in its power to aid
I.C.G. as far as possible. Pres
ident also noted that it is the duty
of Student Government to see
that funds are equally appropri
ated to all organizations.
CONGO CRISIS
After the Berlin Congress, the I.A.C. reorganized
its territory as the Congo Free State. Reports of hor
rendous atrocities, e.g., cutting off hands of natives as
a means of census taking, caused international pressure
to be brought against Belgium. To obtain better control
over internal conditions, Belgium took possession of
the Congo on October 18, 1908, as a colony, a status
maintained until 1960.
