Tennis Season Nears Three Go To Campus By Mike McGinley Sports Editor Behrend’s tennis team will round out their season this weekend when they travel to University Park to compete in the Commonwealth Campus Tournament. Entering the tournament for Behrend will be the doubles team of Jim Lyons and Dave Eastburn and in singles Jay Baker and another player from the squad not yet named. Herbert Lauffer, tennis coach, commented, “I feel we have a very good nucleus returning. Everyone will be back next year with the exception of Bob Mangels. Bob’s game has im proved very much over the year. He has won three out of his last four matches and is 4-4 overall.” The Cub’s record prior to the match at Ashtabula-Kent State May 18 was 3-5 on the season. The squad posted at 1-1 record last week, winning against Beaver Community College 6-3 and dropping the match to Lorain Community College 2-7. The guest speaker will be Bill Roll, three time national wrestling champion and head wrestling coach at Pennsylvania State University. Of the five team members who went to regionals, Steve Ahlgrim placed third with scores of 80, 78; Jeff Mansfield tied for sixth with scores of 82, 81; Jim Codrea placed eleventh with scores of 83, 83. Rick Kern, who also par ticipated, had scores of 85,89 and Ray Pagliani came in with scores of 95,90. Steve Ahlgrim who placed third in the Regional tournament won a chance to go to the national Sty? V. 10017 II The Nittany Cub Cubs Tie Behrend By Tony Alo Sports Reporter The Behrend Campus baseball team tied the school record for most victories in a season by compiling a 3-1 record in last week’s action. The Cub’s 11 wins ties the record set last year when Behrend posted an 11-16 season mark. The Cubs swept both ends of a twinbill from Beaver Campus by 9-1 and 8-3 scores last Thursday. Mark Lytle continued his strong hurling as he went five innings to match his fourth win in the first game. He yielded 3 hits and no earned runs while striking out five! The Cubs struck early as they scored six runs in the first inning on triples by Jim Grieshaber and Jim Bowser and a double by Tom Harvey. Finish; Tournament tournament to be held June 8-11 at the Flint Warwick Hills Country Club and the Flint Golf Club in Flint, Michigan. Behrend’s golf team beat Lakewood Junior College and the Shenango Campus of Penn State in Friday’s tri-match. Behrend’s fourteen points over Lakewood’s 10 and 15 (6 points over Shenango’s 8% came from the scoring of Steve Ahlgrim with an 80 and (6 total points, Ray Pagliani with a 78 and 4(6 total points, Rick Kern with an 82 and 3% total points, Joe Engerski with an 80 and 8 total points, Dale DeMarco with an 86 and 5 total points and John Satyshur with an 81 and 8 total points. Mike Chiricuzio Baseball Smashes Grieshaber, Ruef, and Harvey each had two hits a piece in the nine-hit Behrend barrage. Don Raydo took the second game scattering six hits and two runs as Behrend won 8-3. Tom Wright, the Cub’s star hurler, went three for four with 2 RBl’s while playing in the outfield. Jim Grieshaber rapped 2 hits and knocked in a pair of runs. Behrend took on visiting McKeesport Campus and split a doubleheader dropping the first game 8-5, but bouncing back to take the nightcap 4-3 Saturday, The loss was the third of the season for the Cubs and it snapped a six-game winning streak. The visitors jumped on Behrend starter Tom Wright for five quick runs in the third inning to take a 5-1 lead. Paul Neff had a 3-hitter going for McKeesport until he ran into control problems in the sixth when he walked three consecutive batters to load the bases. Behrend’s first baseman Dave Ruef stroked a single to right, knocking in two runs. Jim Bowser and Tom Harvey followed with run-scoring singles to tie the game at 5-all before the inning was over. Behrend was denied the victory as McKeesport scored three times in their half of the seventh on one hit. Kosentes went three for four with two RBl’s,for the winners while winning pitcher Neff had two hits to lead McKeesport to their 8-5 victory. Don Raydo and Jim Grieshober each went two for two for Behrend. Tom Wright raked for nine hits and six runs, taking the loss and dropping his record to 4-2. Bad defense almost lost it again for Behrend in the second game as McKeesport scored three unearned rims. Mark Lytle turned in an outstanding per formance on the mount for the Cubs as he flipped a three-hitter, fanning thirteen and walking two. It was Terry Kestle’s two-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the seventh that snapped a 3-3 tie and gave Behrend the 4-3 victory. Don Raydo had two safeties in three trips to the plate. Lytle was the winner, running his season ledger to 5-1 while Karper took the loss for McKeesport. Behrend wraps up their 1971 baseball season against Ashtabula-Kent this Tuesday. They face Dubois Campus Saturday in a 1 p.m. twinbill on our home field.
