Swimming
Pool To
Open Soon
The Behrend swimming pool
will open Monday, May 10. Pool
hours will be from 1:00 p.m. to
5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:30
p.m.
Standard rules of regulation,
such as, no glass, no running or
horseplay, must be abided by.
Also, no cut-offs are to be worn
in the pool and showers must be
taken before entering the pool.
The prime concern of keeping the
pool open is meeting the state
regulation of bacteria count. The
above rule was made with this in
mind and must be followed by all
students in order to keep the pool
open.

In baseball this week Behrend took
three out of four games as they
boosted their season record to 4-1.
The Cubs travelled to Buffalo last
Tuesday and swept both ends of the
twinbill from Erie County Community
College by 16-l4and 6-1 counts.
The first game had a combined total
of 28 hits and 30runs were collected by
both teams. Behrend got thirteen hits
while Erie County tagged Cub pit
chers for fifteen.
Behrend scored ten runs in the
fourth inning, taking a 13-8 lead and
holding on for the victory. Bob Marks
collected three hits and three runs
batted in. Dave Ruef knocked in two
runs while Don Raydo and Denny
Patton each had two hits.
Mark Lytle started the game, but
ran into trouble and was tagged for
seven earned runs over the first two
and two-thirds innings. Relief pitching
managed to hold down Erie County's
hitting over the final five. Rich
Schroeder pitched a strong two in
nings and picked up the victory.
Laducca, Jerge, and Strouss each
had three hits for the losers.
In the second game, Tom Wright
scattered seven hits, struck out seven,
and didn't walk a batter as Behrend
won 6-1. Tom Harvey drove in two
runs with a single and a double. Don
Raydo stroked two hits to back up
Wright's pitching.’
The team was back home last
Saturday and split a doubleheader
with rugged Altoona Campus.
Behrend defeated the sophomore
studded visitors in the first game-a 2-1
cliff-hanger. Once again, Tom Wright,
who has not yielded an earned run in
fourteen and two-thirds innings, was
the pitching hero. He held Altoona to
only five hits, struck out five and
walked only two. He also poked two
hits and scored the winning run when
Jim Grieshober drove him in with a
single in the bottom of the seventh.
Don Raydo continued his hitting,
knocking in Behrend's other run.
The nightcap saw the Cub's relief
pitching problems show through as
they dropped an 11-7 decision. They
The Nittany Cub
tied the game at 3-3 in the second
inning, but couldn't silence the enemy
bats. Hill belted a three-run homer, an
opposite field shot, to confirm the
game for the winners. Raydo and
Grieshober each had two hits in a
losing cause for Behrend. Lytle took
the loss, dropping his record to 1-1.
Coach Stoner had some high praise
for the teams performance to date. He
calls his 1971 Cubs "the best balanced
team Behrend has had in a long time.
Last year we had a couple outstanding
players, but this team is outstanding
overall."
Stoner said the basic problem now is
with the pitching staff, especially the
relievers. This is due in part to a few
injuries. For example, Dwight Weibel
has a chronic shoulder problem and he
will be unable to throw for at least a
week, while Mike Kushinikov has a
sore arm and won't be effective for
awhile. Mark Lytle has had control
problems, but the coach is confident
he will be back in form soon.
Stoner said one bright spot has been
Rich Schroeder who has picked up a
victory in relief and pitched well in the
loss to Altoona. However, more depth
is needed in the relief staff and Don
Raydo, Dave Ruef, and possibly Jim
Grieshober look like prime can
didates.
The coach praised Tom Wright who
has a 2-0 record and has not given up
an earned run in over fourteen in
nings. He has also been hitting well
and may. break in somewhere else
when not pitching.
Don Raydo and Bob Marks have the
high averages for the. Cubs so far.
Raydo is holding a .500 pace in
eighteen at-bats with five rbi's which
leads the team in both departments.
Marks is hitting .438 in sixteen at-bats
with four rbi's.
The game scheduled for May 6th
was cancelled. Behrend meets with
Beaver Campus tomorrow in a 1 p.m.
doubleheader at home with Lytle and
Wright as the probable starters.

Tennis Squad
By Mike McGinley
Sports Editor
Trying to get back on the
winning track will be our main
concern this Saturday, said
Coach Lauffer of the tennis
squad. Behrend’s tennis team
will host Beaver Campus at 1
p.m. on the home court. .
The Cubs hurt their record last
week losing to 1 Erie County
College in Buffalo, and Altoona
Campus at home Saturday. Erie
County squeaked by the Cubs 5-4,
while Altoona produced a shut
out, 9-0.
Lauffer said he hopes the fresh
men studded team will iron out
their early season mistakes. The
squad now has a little experience
behind them and will try to im
prove on their 1-3 record.
In the Erie County College
match the scoring went as
follows: Singles: Jay Baker (B)
vs. Bugt. Bharot (ECS), 6-3, 6-4;
Rick Caldwell (B) vs. Carl
Calarese (ECS), 5-7, 4-6; Dave
The Quiet Leader
By Dave Ruef

Number 14 trots out to 2nd
base. A sober expression is im
planted on his face, as he takes
his normal position. The batter
swings and hits a screamer
between first and second.
Number 14 moves quickly to his
left, dives, knocks the ball down,
and quickly rises to one knee and
throws the. runner out.
The team goes wild, but
number 14 has that same solemn
expression and goes back to his
position. Number 14 is Terry
Kestle-“The Quiet Leader.”

good, damned good. He goes out

and does his job, but what a job.
He’s a vacuum defensively and
extremely consistent with the
bat. The strange thing is you
never hear him, he just leads you
and inspires you by his examples.
Terry, who was an All County
2nd baseman at Fort Leßoeuf, is
the only starting sophomore on
this year’s team, as he hit 293 for
Behrend last season.
But don’t ask Terry about being
a leader, he’ll deny it. Instead,
ask anyone on the team, they’ll
set you straight. Better yet ask
his coach. Coach Stoner sums it
up thi§. way, “If I had 9 Terry
Kestles, I sure wouldn’t lose
many games.”
