Phillip lobst presents an outline of the general arts and science
major requirements and electives. The general arts and science
major is currently one of the two upper division majors offered at
Behrend Campus.

broadly based curriculum.
Specialized, vocationally
oriented course programs.
In justification of the program,
lobst said that it would strive to
encourage student application of
their capabilities, provide a wide
range of educational options for
students, and make efficient
usage of faculty and facilities at
Behrend’s disposal.
David Daniel of Behrend’s
history department later said,
“The purpose of the program is to
provide the student with the
opportunity to follow his own
desire and not that of the
faculty.”
Kochel said, “Behrend’s
faculty turnover is one of the
•lowest in the entire system.”
About half of the faculty at

and suggestions were posed by
those who did attend.
Louis Balmer, head of the
chemistry department, proposed
that if a student is incapable of

10 allotted weeks, that he be
granted additional time to fullfill
the requirements. Balmer asked
if Behrend could possibly expand
the present course catalogue.
Kochel said this will hopefully,
come about in the future..
John Musala, a sophomore
SGA representative said that one
of the reasons for the rejection of
the program by the student’s is
the lack of communication
between faculty-administration
and students.
However, Daniel said the real
gap lay between faculty and
students.
The proposal for academic
development was opposed April
7, by the SGA by a 9-4 vote. The
plan was presented to SGA the
night before the vote was taken.
Questions arose about the two
general upper division majors
now offered at Behrend, general
arts and sciences and general
science.
lobst said “The general majors
don’t seem to be quite as at
tractive as we thought. ”
Richard Tomsic, assistant
professor of psychology, said, “A
more flexible program will
require a more efficient advisory
program.”
lobst said that this will be one
of the problems that will have to
be dealt with.
SUMMER JOBS!
We are recruiting a limited number of students for interesting, well-paying
positions in their home areas when classes are completed. You will be dealing
with the owners of. business firms and doctors, offering a service which costs
them nothing unless our home office produces money for them. We prefer
full-time employees, but some part-time positions are open. Write immediately,
giving age and home town. We’ll send, details and application by return mail.
