Oswald Speaks On Progress
University Park, Pa., March 27
"Is it inherently better to be
bigger, stronger, faster?"
This was one of the questions
raised today by Dr. John W.
Oswald, president of The Penn
sylvania State University, in his
remarks to the 1,230 graduates
receiving their degrees at the
Winter Term commencement
excercises at Penn State.
"Is all increased mechaniza
tion also progress or is it a social
decadence and impersonal
blight? How does this increase in
power and mobility serve us and
how does it destroy our
quietude?" Dr. Oswald con
tinued.
Never before has there been
such general concern among
youth as to what is a better/fuller
life for ourselves and for all
people, the Penn State president
continued, asking if, "ius't

something faster or to go farther,
is it human wisdom to do so?"

Dr. Oswald told the graduates
among them more rhan 300
receiving advanced degrees
that "the exciting thing about this
generation is that for the most
part you are choosing in great
numbers to deal with the survival
crises of our time."
"Sometimes," he continued,
"older people urge more
patience, additional experience,
seasoned wisdom but the
important fact is that most of you
are choosing to use the op
portunity to be a part of the
determination of direction for our
world."

The Honorable Earl Warren,
retired Chief Justice of the
United States Supreme Court,
will be the speaker for the June
commencement exercises at the
Pennsylvania State University.
His acceptance for the
program,- scheduled for Satur
day, June 19, was announced
today by Dr. John W. Oswald,
president of the University, in
conjunction with Michael Y.
Kleeman, of Philadelphia,
president of the Senior Class.
Chief Justice Warren, a long
time friend of President Oswald,
indicated he is coming especially
to participate in the installation
of Dr. Oswald as the 13th
president of the University.
The inaugural program will be
a brief part of the June 19
ceremony in accordance with
action of the Board of Trustees of
the University.
(7) Recreational
Sponsors and supervises pool and ping-pong tournaments and oversees
Behrend participation in the Commonwealth-Campus Intercollegiate
League. This committee is also responsible for sending a campus
representative to the ACU-LRegional Recreational Tournament.
(8) Publicity
Publicizes SUB events and major campaigns while assisting the SUB
committees as needed.
(9) Special Services
Prnvidesspecial effects required by many of the SUB's events.
Nixon Has “Hair”

on Tuesday through Saturday
evening at 8:30 p.m.; Sunday
evening at 7:30 p.m.; and

Effective immediately Dr.
Charles L. Lewis will no longer
serve as vice president for
Student Affairs at The Penn
sylvania State University, a
now in its second SRO year on
Broadway and has achieved
international success in London,
Paris, Munich, Stockholm,
Sydney, Amsterdam and
Dusseldorf.
The original cast recording has
taken the country by storm as
have four of its songs,
“Aquarius”, “Let the Sunshine
In”, “Good Morning Starshine”,
and “Hair”.
“Hair” has proven to be a
milestone in the American
musical theatre. To avoid

Affairs
decision agreed upon mutually by
Dr. Lewis and University
President John W. Oswald.
Dr. Raymond O. Murphy, dean
of Student Affairs, has been
named acting vice president for
Student Affairs.
President Oswald has asked
Dr. Lewis to conduct an in-depth
study of counseling services
during the Spring Term.
Penn State is recognized for its
work in counseling services and
to help maintain and improve
upon its present competence, Dr.
Lewis will study "Current trends
and organization at other in
stitutions of the nature of Penn
State.
This study, combined with Dr.
Lewis’ knowledge of Penn State’s
counseling program, will provide
the University with valuable
insight into counseling services.
