-April 8,1977 Hard Happy Harriers Having High Hopes “Penn State’s 1971 track team is a young team with potential. Just how good it will be depends on desire and development.” That’s how coach Harry Groves feels about his team as the Nittany Lions prepare for an ambitious outdoor schedule. The Lions, 6-1 in dual meets last year, will encounter a much stronger schedule in 1971. This year’s team shows promise in the hurdles and the field events. Groves can call on five quality hurdlers in Scott Chatham, Fred Singleton, Greg Rogers, Ed Chubb and Doug Dickinson. Dickinson, the top scorer on the team last year as a freshman may concentrate on the 100 yard dash, triple jump and long jump this year. Dickinson, Rick Allen and Gene Becker are all quality Pros Snatch College Players SPORTS CORNER The 1971 Major League Baseball All-Star ballots will be out-soon with an expanded list of 64 players to choose from. Eight players are listed at each position. The Detroit Tigers lead the other big league clubs with nine nominees. The world champion Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates are next with eight apiece jumpers Co-captain Scott Hagy and junior Bob Gill give the Lions two of the East’s best javelin men. Joe DeStefano and Bill Dvorzak are steady in the shot put and discus. John Glass and Tom Pavlick are the top men in the hammer throw and add team strength in the discus. Pole vaulter Joe Steffie and high jumpers Dan Tarr and Bob Sheep round out a solid group of field event performers. “We have distance runners with good potential, although they must develop,” Groves says. BUDWEISER.’-'JOHN WAYNE Thursday, April 8 8:30-10 P.M. EST NBC-TV Penn State will field a young, inexperienced baseball team in 1971. “We lack experience, par ticularly among our pitchers and infielders,” says Nittany Lion coach Chuck Medlar. “We will be a hustling ballclub as most young teams are.” Team captain Roy Swanson and junior lefthander Jim Conroy are the only experienced pitchers on the Lion staff. Top candidates for the other jobs on the staff include juniors Chet Cinamella and Frank Stulgis and freshmen John Maier and Rick Sherkel. Cinamella, a righthander, returns after three years in the service. Stulgis a lefthander with a good fastball comes to the main campus after two years at Penn State’s New Kensington campus. Medlar also has hopes for sophomores Fred Adams, Bill Rumbaugh, John Tekely, Bob Si ' ‘ ~ ‘ imith and Tom Kirsh and senior Rick Fidler. A spot pitcher last year, Fidler, has been bothered by a sore arm. The Lions are well-stocked in the receiving department. George Landis, a second team All-District selection last year when he led the team in hitting with a .373 average, returns for his third season as a regular. A defensive halfback on the football team, Landis is also a fine defensive catcher. Medlar expects the outfield to be another one of the team’s strong points. Senior John Galluppi returns to left field and Harry Rogers is back in right after a strong sophomore season East West Winners World Series East' West ■ Winners World Series “A memorable, heart-warming 90 minutes . “I hope you will replay your special so our parents might have the opportunity to see it." Sophomore Bennie DeWitt and junior Cliff Steffy are the top candidates to replace the graduated Tom Daley in center field. The Lions must replace three fourths of last year’s starting infield. Mike Smith, an out standing defensive second baseman.who hit .273 last year, is the only returning regular. Don Stine, an aggressive sophomore, has the inside track on the third base job. First base could go to junior Mark Tanner, but he is being pressed by Sherkel, Maier, and possibly Landis. “Shortstop is the most wide open position,” according to Medlar. Jerry Micsky, freshman brother of last year’s ace pitcher Bill Micsky, has been impressive with the glove. He is being pushed by senior Rick Rose, the back-up man the last two years. Senior Gary Murphy is the team’s top utility man and can play any of the infield positions. (From Penn State Baseball the 1971 Press Guide) 2901 BUFFALO ROAD 899-9666 Cubs (WOW!)
