L.A. Students
Flexible Program
Students with an Arts and
Science major can obtain
greater flexibility in planning
their education under the
terms of five new options
recently approved for the
College of the Liberal Arts.
Under the new program
students will take 18 credits
divided between Arts,
Humanities, Social Sciences,
and Science and Mathematics
These credits are in addition
to previously established
basic liberal. arts degree
requirements and guarantee
undergraduates a certain
amount of general education.
A student may also select
another 18 credits from one of
the four previously men
tioned areas including
several different subjects
within his specialization; For
example, . with the
Humanities option, he could
take courses in literature,
religious studies and
philosophy - “specializing”
in the humanities but not in
any one subject area.

the course offerings at the
University. A student might
decide to get a Liberal Arts

terests in the College of
Business Administration. Or
he might fulfill medical
school entrance requirements
by taking his 18 credits4n the

gratifying his desire for a
background concentration in
the Liberal Arts.

Committee
Needs ideas
Interested in picking on in
coming freshman next fall?!!?
Join the Orientation Committee
now being formed by the S.G.A.
The formation of the committee
this early is to give the resident
students as well as the com
muting students a chance to
come up with new- ways of
“torturing” new students, and
acclimate students to their new
environment. What new goodies
can the upper classmen think up
for “Kangaroo Court”? Just
think, nere is your chance for
revenge! If you are interested,
contact a S.G.A. member.

Jefferson Airplane grounded due
to technical (as well as per

as there is room for all who want,
to board the Jefferson Starship. .

Paul Kanter, the pilot, has
assembled an interesting crew to
make a go of things, but due to
the predominance he makes felt
the album fails in many ways.
The saving grace of Slick, Balin,
Casady, Garcia, Hart, Kreutz
mann, Nash, Crosby, and a few
others, keeps Blows Against The
Empire listenable.
Paul Kanter was always a good
guitarist for the Airplane, and
had a decent voice for supporting
vocals, but in no way can he
assume the role of Jorma or
Marty. This is one criticism of the
album.
Another losing force is Joey
Covingtom who simply fails
miserably. With Joey’s joining of
the Airplane, the beginning of the
end w’as clearly evident, although
signs were present for quite some
time.
Ranter’s album attempts to
maintain an Airplane image
which doesn’t make it. The new
take off (ie. Jefferson Starship) is
a clever gimmick of substituting
vogue lyrics for solid music.. The
best parts of the album come
when old Airplane and Dead
people get things together.
'Mau-Mau’ is the epitome of the
Kanter Covington ego thing and
this is the worst of what is on the
album. Other low points occur
through-out most of the first side
and only a cute banjo thing called
‘The Baby Tree' and the oc
casional Slick vocals, break the
monotony until the end of the last
cut, ‘A Child Is Coming’ when
Jack Casady wades through
Ranter’s shit to get it on with
David Crosby and Gracie Slick.

I Am Human
I will Be Alive Again

in some surreal landscape; this
celestial sequence can be blamed
on some science fiction flick I
once saw. The vocal is Gracie’s
voice over hers again and she
may be putting down some
questionable things, but its more
her voice as an instrument than
the lyrics.
‘Hi Jack’ isn’t bad, as the
Balin-Slick harmony effectively
copulates with Ranters voice.
The changes are nice, but it is
Gracie who makes it.
