Optimistic
By Dave Ruef
Behrend Campus will unveil
their female Cubs Thursday,
January 21, against the Slippery
Rock Independents at Slippery
Rock. The talented, hardworking
group of gals hopes to attain a
winning record during the eight
game season.
Girls basketball coach, Mrs.
Laudensack, is very optimistic
and hopes for student support
throughout the season. “I feel the
girls have shown much desire
and enthusiasm in preparing for
the season opener.” Mrs.
Laudensack also added, “Since
there is no charge for admission,
I expect a favorable turnout for
the home games.”

Sports
The only thing I enjoyed about
the Super Bowl was the outcome.
...Well, South Carolina is falling
by the wayside in the Atlantic
Coast Conference, even worse
than I expected. The Gamecocks
can’t seem to handle a ball
control team, and I’m afraid
Frank McGuire’s boys will see a
lot more of this especially in the
ACC play-offs. Right now
everybody is gunning for the
Gamecocks, but I look for John
Roche and the rest of the New
York playground team to put S.C.
back on the winning track, soon!
...Tommy Protho (UCLA), new
coach of the Rams, and Dan
Devine (Missouri), new coach of
the Packers? Two big mistakes
in my opinion. I don’t think they
can handle it. ...Had a chance to
see Johnny Wooden’s UCLA
squad in Pittsburgh’s Steel Bowl
over Christmas, and the only
thing that can be said is D-E-V-A-
S-T-A-T-I-N-G. Once Sidney
Wicks and Curtis Raure warm
up, it’s time to sit back and watch
the massacre. I can’t foresee the
Bruins losing, even in a ball
control game, because Wicks and
Raure are so dominant. When
you add a cast of Bibby, Pat
terson, Farmer, Booker and
Schofield to the dynamic duo, it’s
time to start looking forward to
the game after you play UCLA.
Anybody who watched Johnny
Wooden in both games had to be
impressed. I’ve never seen a
coach so calm, as if, well, it’s
only a matter of time.

Move Ahead On Two
With two commonwealth
campus victories under their
belt, the Behrend Cubs face two
important foes at Erie Hall this
coming Friday night, and
Saturday afternoon.
Last week Behrend opened
their commonwealth campus
action in fine style by defeating
Dußois Campus and McKeesport
Campus.
Last Wednesday, Behrend
traveled to McKeesport and won
the game handily by a 91-67
margin. Up by only six points at
halftime, however, it took an
effective zone-press to break the
game wide open. Leading the
Cubs in scoring was Ike Burnett
with a 21 point performance. Also
hitting double figures were Gary
Borowy (18), Glenn McKinney
(16), Ron Kwasneski (15), and
Chuck Donnell (13):
On Friday, it was Behrend’s
well-balanced attack that blew
Dußois right out of Erie Hall, as
they rolled up a 91-54 win. Once
again there were five Cubs in
double figures, led by Gary

The intramural basketball
season is heading toward' an
exciting finish with a ‘close knit’
race in each league. In league A,
it’s the East Side Keggers at the
head of the pack with a 3 - 0
record. The Keggers are
followed by the Faculty, Cobras
and Huskies, all at 2 -1. The Dog
Town Boys and the J.O.S.’s are
bringing up the rear at 0 - 3.
In league B, the Behrend Hard
Corps hold a 2-game lead with a 4
- 0 record. The NoNames,
Hasannas, Kelly Heroes and
Wombats are all tied at 2- 2. In
the cellar is the Nine with an 0 - 4
slate.
After the January 26 galnes the
top two or three teams will be
decided in each league, with the
champions emerging from these
teams.

support from McKinney (11),
Dan Porath (12), Don Williams

latter three were cited by Coach

Friday, January 22, Behrend
entertains one of the best campus
teams, New Kensington, a team
which defeated Behrend last year
by 30 points. Playing at home,
and full of revenge, the Cubs seek
to reverse last year’s setback.
Starting time is 8:15 p.m.
The following afternoon at 3:00

Behrend. Last year Behrend put
down Fayette by a scant two

Again On
Coach Ed Onorato will lead his
patched-up line-up into com
petition against the New Ken
sington campus gropplers, at 6:30
p.m., Friday. This will be
Behrend’s first encounter with
New Kensington in wrestling.
Behrend presently stands 0-2 in
dual meets, losing to Erie County
College and Lorain County
Community College.
This year’s team has been
riddled with injuries causing
coach Onorato to juggle his line
up. Out for the season is
heavyweight Larry Whistler, who
is recovering from a knee
operation. Definitely out for
Friday’s match are Jim Mat

players and optimism for the big
basketball weekend. “The boys
have played very well up to this
point. The 4-5 record is not a true
indication of the team’s potential,
as we have played some ex
tremely fine junior college teams
thus far. I think the next two
games are important and will
give us a better indication on how
we’ll do the remainder of the
year.”
This reporter also sees this as a
big basketball weekend,
however, after this last week’s
victories and the next two
games, I think Behrend will once
again prove its superiority in the
commonwealth. I encourage all
to attend the all-important games
this weekend.

CUB Sports Editor
As it stands now the line-up for
Friday’s match will be as follows
118 lb., Hedges (1-1); 126 lb.,
Proctor (1-1); 1341 b., Feasler (0-
2); 142 lb.' doubtful; 150 lb.,
doubtful, possibly Tom Schoff
stall; 1581 b., Jancewski (1-0); 167
lb., either Erickson (1-0) or
Garson (0-0); 1771 b. Stascewski;
191 lb., Biehler-doubtful;
heavyweight -out.
When asked to comment on the
remainder of the season, Mr.
Onorato replied, “We can only
look forward to our next match
and no further, due to our lack of
versatility and wrestlers. We
have to go out and wrestle the
way we want to, that’s all we can
do for the remainder of the
season.”
