Coffee House
A Good High
By Gary Thornbloom
Managing Editor
Lack of something to do was
not a legitimate complaint last
Weekend. Roger and Wendy, the
first in a series of the, Coffee
House Circuit, provided a well
blended sound pleasing to all who
turned themselves on to it.
Wendy played bass and joined
vocals with Roger who played
electric autoharp and organ. Not
too many chicks take on the bass
as an instrument, but as a bassist
Wendy was surprisingly good.
Roger's hands moved nimbly
over the strings of his customized
autoharp and was the basis of the
duo's style. For the keyboard
side of Roger's talents he used a
Gibson organ with a strange
(flute) setting. The sound was
sort of like an electric piano, but
as the sustained notes flowed on
you realized that your first im
pression was a wrong one.
The most appealing point of
these two was their vocals. Their
voices are unbelievably gifted.
Talent such as theirs is not the
usual entertainment made
available here on campus.
Extremely prominent was the
folk influence on their style but
equally evident was the strength
displayed by their vocals.
Together they easily could have
held their own in a folk-rock band
If YOU WOULD
TAKE THE TIME
By Charles P. Eschweiler
There are rock heads and there
are rock HEADS! The difference
between the former and the latter
is that the former just run about
being music freaks, buying the
"right" albums and going to
concerts a lot, rock for them is a
relaxation, possibly an escape
valve from their everyday
existence.
The latter are a different sort,
most of them have been into what
is now laughingly called "Un
derground Rock" for quite some
time, they know the members of
their, favorite bands, they know
the groups producers, and they
can manage to get off on a good
album from the music alone.
Rock heads like the music, but
rock HEADS are who the
musicians play for.
Hot Tuna is an album for rock
HEADS, which means that unless
your favorite part of the Jef
ferson Airplane is the bass and
guitar team of Jack Casady and
Jorma Kaukonen you might take
a while to get into the album. -
The group was originally
created by Gracie Slicks throat
operation, an event which caused
- the Airplane to cancel quite a few
concerts. Instead - of sitting
around and stagnating Jack and
Jorma began playing the smaller
clubs in the San Francisco area,
as Hot Tuna, they would simply
get whoever they could to play
with them, and go unannounced
into a club, it's to their credit that
they didn't pull an egotistical
"Jack. Casady and Jorma
Kaukonen's Hot Tuna.
The result was that their
audience judged them as if they
were just another new group
(which was what too many people

such as the early Jefferson
Airplane. Being mentioned with
reference to the slick /Balin
combination is to be sure, an
extremely high compliment, but
Roger and Wendy deserve it.
The fullness of their sound was
no easy task to master . with the
resources of only two in
struments. Their sound was full
of the vitality expressed by the
two artists. It was apparent from
their stage attitude that they get
their high by interrelating with
the audience.
Balance was no small factor in
the quality of their sound. With
the p.a. system they used, they
had more than enough power to
exceed a comfortable listening
volume. Thankfully they did
have the sense not to over do it.
The atmosphere throughout the
room was as good as you could
expect in the modern en
vironment. The best coffee house
type thing is held in an old
building with a rustic air to it.
The attendance for the three
nights wasn't real bad, but the
response of students could cer
tainly have been better.
If the talent in future coffee
house presentations is as fine as
Roger and Wendy were, then it
would definitely be worth while to
continue attending these shows.
JUST
To
who saw them in Erie last spring
failed to realize).
The album being reviewed here
is the first version of Hot Tuna,
Jorma playing acoustic guitar,
Jack just creating a bottom, a
rock solid on at that, and Will
Scarlett blowing a restrained
harp when the fancy strikes him.
The guys play blues, straight
ahead country blues by Leadbelly
and Jelly Roll Morton, Jorma
sings them in a sassy and salty
voice that doesn't even try to
sound black. . .and that's why it
succeeds, its just Jorma being
himself, a lean and tall desolation
cowboy sneering lines like
"If you want to taste my
fricasee you'd better run me
,down" and then stepping back
and playing a few guitar lines
that sound like he has twenty
fingers.
There will be the inevitable
comparisons to Pentangle and
John Mayall running down his
neurotic past experiences and
then preaching, and the presence
of Jack Casady, that great hairy
gnome of a bass player gives the
goings on balls, something the
Pentangle has a deficiency of.
'this album is proot that
Casady and Kaukonen are the
best bass and guitar team in
rock, and while the publicity for
albums this year is going to be for
Clapton, The Band, The Moody -
Blues and a hundred other pets of
the media Hot Tuna very quietly
just might emerge as the album
of the year.
Casady, Kaukonen and Scarlett
are the kind of guys you'd give
the last sip, - enough said. .hear
the album and you'll find out.

Turning onto the road behind
the dorms one night, I had to wait
for one of the rent-a-cops to drive
back into his own lane so I could
proceed. One point for the
R.A.C.'s.
Is there anything to the rumor
that some students find it easier,
and less confusing, to not listen to
some of the profs' lectures and
explanations?
Walking from parking lot 3 to
the 0.8. building after a rain
storm can be a challenge. A
person has to decide which of the
three-perils to - take: the mud bog
to the left, the lake on the
sidewalk, or the swamp to the
left.
I'm surprised you don't have to
have an activity card to play the
juke box. Maybe I shouldn't have
said anything, you can't tell what
they might do next.
I heard that the sinks in the
girls' dorm, food and such are
found. Can you imagine washing
your face after cole slaw or the
remains of a dirty turtle bowl are
found. Too bad some people
never grow up.
Don't forget to vote
for the S.G.A. can

mean if you don't vote,
don't complain if things
aren't done.

How would you like equalized
rights for the Commonwealth
Campuscs, or lights on the tennis
courts? Even better a revised
pre-registration to ensure choice
of courses and an evaluation of
teachers by a student poll.
These are just some of the
ideas I will concentrate on if you
elect me your representative to
S.G.A. I will also be open to any
suggestions or ideas from the
student body throughout the year
which you would want brought
before the S.G.A. organization.
I have had experience
representing students as an of
ficer in Campus Organizations
including Samothr ace and
Cwens. I have spent a long time
surveying the elections and the
part I play in them. I feel that I
could play a constructive part in
the S.G.A. organization if given
the chance so I ask you to vote for
me, Linda Payes. Thank you.
indispensible Assets To
Survive Erie Weather
By Patsy Wheatley
CUB Staff Writer
Although I'm • not a native of
Erie, I have become familiar
with two basic pieces of equip
ment needed for weathering the
storm. Freshmen are advised to
take note. Erie natives have
warned me that it is necessary to
keep these objects with me at all
times. The one time that I might
forget them could be the time
that I need them the most.
Because I resent occasionally
useless items, I have found other
purposes for that weather
problem.
I am told that an umbrella is
the important weapon. I have
already learned never to com
ment on a sunny day unless I
have an umbrella in hand. When
it is not needed as protection
from the elements, an umbrella
can serve as a status symbol, a
wardrobe accessory, or a means
of self-defense. After all, what
other co-ed on campus can slyly
convert her unused umbrella into
a walking stiqk? If it is flowery
or colorful, an umbrella is an
asset to any wardrobe. I've been
informed that umbrellas are also

Sophomores, how many times
last year did your S.G.A.
representatives ask your opinion
on a pending issue?
After all, what is the function of
a representative? Supposedly
they exist to voice your opinion.
If elected I intend to find out the
opinions of as many students as
possible and cast my vote for the
majority. Respectfully, Dennis
Hart
As an incoming freshman, I
quickly saw a need for more
organization among students. A
separation between dorm
students and commuters coupled
with a lack of "things to do on
campus" convinced me of my
committments to make this
campus grow and hopefully work
in conjunction with the four other
local colleges.
However, as an SGA
Representative, I cannot work
without the support of the
students themselves. The final
decision is theirs alone. Jim

helpful for walks at night. They
can be used as defensive weapons
against all would-be attackers on
campus. In case it 'does rain,
which is a daily possibility at
Behrend, the umbrella can be
used for its originally intended
purpose.
Because the average yearly
snowfall for Erie is 84.8 inches, I
find it wise to have a pair of
snowshoes handy. Not only do
they keep me from sinking deep
into soft snow, but they may also
become a fad. If everyone
follows the advice of Erie winter
weather veterans, snowshoes
may become more popular on
campus than combat boots.
Snowshoes would also be ap
propriate items to hand on the
wall where they would always be
handy. I doubt if they could be
suspended from the metal strip
intended for this purpose in the
dorm, though.
These items are an in
dispensible asset for survival in
dreary Erie weather. They are
even more of a asset to me
because of the alternate functions
I have found for them.
