Criticism ruffs blown our way, and it is necsseary to rationalize the place ment of this letter on the front page. • Sometimes it is better to sacrifice good journalism for the Tireater ends, which is popularly called muckraking. To the common man, "muckraking" is detrimental, but in the realistic sense, it is a watchdog on (in this case) your stu dent legislators. As is the apparent case in the American society today, the Student Government Association is comprised of work ers such as Steve, John, Roy Kirkley, Janet Atkin, and Doug Brower. The remainder of the membership is the SGA's silent majority. The majority of the members have no under standing of the problems which are presented to them to solve, they merely cast their votes. Steve and John's letter was a testimony from within the structure of the SGA to the lameness of our "legisla tors." The "shock value" of the article balanced the jour nalistic eror of its placement. Some people cannot be moved (in any direction) by proper English, therefore, every country in the world has derived dialects or low-grade vernacular systems. This was a fine display of American "underground vernacular." , It i.true, that the underground papers finally degener ated to the althOst total use of this - structured (?) language. But, we must consider the fact that Erie is six years behind the rest of - the country, therefore the words "Balls" and "ass" still shock rainy persons. _ _ _ Hopefully they will outgrow this immature attitude, but until they are able to be moved by pure logical reporting, such antics on our part will be carried on whenever we deem it necessary to generate a reaction of any sort. Therefore no apologies to anyone are offered. IF a dirty word offends you, you still have a lot of growing up to do. I==3 THE NITTANY CUB On Wednesday, April 14, 1970 Norval Reese, the man running against State Senator William Sesler for the Democratic nomi nation to the United States Sen ate, gave a speech in the lecture hall of the Reed Union Building here at Behrend. While briefly stating his position on the pollu tion and ecology problem, Mr. Reese added that Senator Sesler had not introduced one piece of legislation against pollution dur ing the past nine years in office —thus implying Sesler's sterility in office. I think this idea is slightly twisted, to say the least, and is probably on the verge of slander. I think it has. no relevance to Senator Sesler's ability to• repre sent the people of Pennsylvania in the United States Senate. Ses ler has nothing to do with the Senate committees on • Public Health, Water or Air Pollution. He is, instead, a member of the Senate Education Committee and his records speaks for itself. When Sesler was first elected to the Pennsylvania Senate, in DEAR CHARLY (Anyone having a question on anything, please send your que . - tion to Charly Lee, c/o Publica tions office, Reed TJnion Building, Behrend Campus. All questions will become property of the CUB and will be eligible for printing.) Dear Charly, Why is it that at the end of the lunch hoUr there is hardly any food left? Dear G. 1., To answer that question I would like to introduce you to a brand-new, original and different concept; the early-bird gets the worm.' I imagine that if, the cafe teria staff kept an adequate sup ply of all the food selections, then at the close of the lunch-hour they have a hell-of-a-lot of food on . their hands. Some food stuffs cannot be stored and reused. Thinking about the saying that the early bird gets the worm, re minds. me of the time that Doug Brower was eating a cafeteria baked potato, and guess what he found . . Dear Charly, Who do we write to if we have a complaint about a teacher? Signed, C.F.L. To simplify_ matters somewhat, if you have a complaint. about a particular teacher that you have, write out the complaint and eith er send it to me in the mail, or else give it to me when you see me around the campus. Make sure that the letter is in a seal ed envelope and that. the letter is signed. I will make sure it is de livered to the correct administra tor. This is on the level. Signed, Charly Dear Charly, If you're majoring in something like Art why does Penn State make you take courses like Poli tical Science and Biology? Signed, A future artist Dear F.A., . I think that if Ronnie Reagan had taken •a few Pali. Sol. courses, he'd have a better understanding of how the government functions. I also think that if William Hill had taken a few courses in biology, he would see the danger of environmental pollution and file suit against the Erie indus Letters To The Editor 1961, he was the prime mover in the creation of, and key to the adoption of and application of the Pennsylvania State Senator ial Scholarship System. This was the first major educational as sistance program on any govern mental level since Roosevelt's Na tional Youth Administration in 19135 during the Great Depression. However, Sesler soon found ways to improve his own plan.• He de solved the Senatorial Scholar ship program and again was the prime mover in the creation of the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency in 1967. This system was heralded- by the Uni ted States Department of Health, Education and Welfare and was a basis for a similar plan in sev eral other states. Let's face it, if it were not for Senator Sesler and his P.H.E.A.A. half of us today would be unable to attend -Behrend and get a bet ter education. I think Mr. Reese should give credit where credit is due and return to manufacturing peanut butter cups: Don Williams tries that are killing our Earth Signed, Charly As of late, the - student has been handed much power. Some of this power is in the form of the - priv ilage to voice, openly, opinions; views, and critiques- of his world, immediate and remote. This is the power of student criticism. However, students fail ,to realize that criticism is a two-fold opera tion. It is most important that when a student points out a de ficiency in a school law, or gov ernmental policy, he is under an implied obligation to present a better plan or way of doing some thing. This is a very simply rule of criticism, I know, but it's one that is often overlooked. Signed, G.I Dear Charly; What do you think is the major pollution problem? Dear R.S.K., Politics. Come and swim in Lake Erie, the only lake with wretch-ap peal! Dear Editor: I am fasting for Peace, by the time this is printed, I will be re covering. Maybe all I'll get out of my three days of hunger will be a stomachache, hopefully I will have reaffirmed my conviction that Peace is a good thing, hope fully my meals will be given to someone in greater need. I have heard the myth that fighting (killing) for my' country will give me rights or, sustain them, in any case I've heard also that violence breeds violence. I have listened, I have; read about the past, I see the present violence is spawning violence in a never ending way. When will people listen to the past and see the present? People not purple or green, but White and Black and Red and and Yel low people are dying. People of the same human race. When will educated people clean up their environment- and feed their children and love one another. When will people a-ccept the differences, . different cul tures and ideas bring? Why is there still a dress code for ath letes here at Behrend? To look like a team member I wear a uniform, isn't that enough? I cannot answer apathy, at times lam apathetic. But for those who have read thus far; liken and observe, it gives one wisdom, love one another, peace is the product, be proud and free, appreciate what you have, change what is bad to preserve what is good. And come to our dances (they are rare), come • and dance with me to the music, come to the phone or to my room and rap, and the next time you see me, flash the peace sign show me you. care that others die or hunger or merely exist.
