Wrestlers Take Trophy
In Tournament At U. P.
Another championship was taken home by a Behrend team this season. Coach Onaroto's grappl
ers won the Commonwealth Campus Tournament last weekend with five champions. The tournament
was much better than last year's with 12 campuses and 105 entries participating. It turned out to be a
battle between Behrend and Dubo:
After the first round neither
Behrend nor Dubois had any
points. In the second round
Behrend had 10, Mont Alto had
10, and Dubois had 9 points, fol
lowed by Schuylkill and New
Kensington each with eight
points
The third round was the key
round of the tournament. Behr
end and Dubois each had seven
winning this round and the Cubs
picked up one more pin than Du
bois to lead 70-68. Mont Alto and
Berks were far behind with 18 and
16 points respectively.
Dubois and Behrend each took
pins in the consolation matches,
Coover for the Cubs and Dona
hue for Dubois, for third place.
In the final round, Behrend
and Dubois were matched in six
of seven rounds.

Go For Record
University Park, Pa., March---
If Penn State can defeat Rutgers
this Saturday in wrestling the
Nittany Lions will achieve their
first perfect season since 1953, the
year they won their only national
championship.
This would be State's third un
defeated season since 1953 and
coach Bill Koll's second. The
Lions were 9-0-1 in 1960 under
Charlie Speidel and under Koll in
1967, they were 8-0-1.
The Lions enter the match at
New Brunswick with a 10-0 record
that includes an 18-16 win over
Navy, an 18-15 win over Lehigh
and a thrilling 17-16 decision over
Pittsburgh in their latest outing.
The Lions have undefeated reg
ulars at five weights. Dave Weber,
the 118-pounder whose 9-2 victory
in the opening bout against Pitt
was a key factor, is 9-0-1 with
two falls. Clyde Frantz, defend
ing Eastern champion at 150 1
pounds is 8-0-1; John High (190
pounds) is 9-0; 167-pound Andy
Matter is 9-0 with five pins, and
heavyweights Ira Lubert (5-0-1)
and Dave Joyner (2-0-2) have
kept that weight class unbeaten.
Joyner is the current regular
and will wrestle against Rutgers.
Koll, who has coached Penn'
State wrestling for six years, is
considered by many the greatest
wrestler ever produced at north-:
ern lowa. After 11 years of coach
lng at his alma mater, he has
compiled an impressive 44-12-4
record at Penn State.

Last Thursday, March 5, the
Curcio Chargers Basketball team
closed out the season with a 41-26
victory over the Gannon Girls to
bring their season record to 3-3.
The Chargers broke loose in the
second quarter after a 6-6 tie in
the first. Debbie Carlson scored
13 points in •this quarter, and at
the end of the half it was Behr

game was easy sailing although
a fight almost broke out because

and kept him on his back for a
full minute before pinning him.
Hwt. Jeff Moyer (Berks)
pinned all opponents in his
weight class. Len Coover was one
of his victims in the semi-final
round.
Of the 21 matches the Cubs
wrestled, they only lost four.
Overall the Cubs worked as a
team and really worked hard the
last two weeks for this tourna
ment and it paid off.
The Cubs wrestled some tough
teams during the season and al
though their duel meet record
wasn't very good, they showed
what they could really do by
winning the tournament. Behrend
took first with 93 points, follow
ed by Dubois with 82 points and
Mont -Alto with 33 points.
Congratulations to the team
and their fine, hard-working
coach Ed Onaroto.

Debbie 'Carlson was high scorer
with 26 points. Gannon was the
roughest t eam the Chargers
played all season, but the Charg

played their best.
Playing for their second year
for Behrend were Pat Post and
Mary Jane Kramer who contri
buted much to the team.
-o- SPORTS VIEWS -o
The NBA West will have three teams battling for the two play
off spots . . . Phoenix and Chicago are virtually tied for third with
34-42 and 33-41 records, respectively . . . Last week Seattle was
sixth, just behind San Francisco . . . Now Seattle is 33-42, or 1 / 2
game behind Phoenix and Chicago . . . Meanwhile, the Warriors are
just about confined to sixth with their 28-47 record .. . In the east,
Philadelphia beat New York 133-116, but the four playoff members
are almost set now . . The Knicks lead the uprising Milwaukee
Bucks by 6 1 / 2 games, the Baltimore Bullets by 12 1 / 2 games, and the
76ers by 19 games . . . Cincinnati and Boston are another 7 games
behind Philadelphia, and they will be content to battle for fifth
place UPI has released its college basketball ratings and the last
loss by UCLA. cost them the title .. . The champion is the Southern
Conference champion, Kentucky, who polled 304 points to UCLA's
290 points . . . Third to seventh places are as f011Ows: St. Bonaven
ture (243) New Mexico State (200), Jacksonville . (187), South -Car
olina (142), and lowa (140) . . . Notre Dame, Drake and Marquette
finished out the top ten, each polling about 45 points „ . Mean
while, Spring "trainingis in full swing now, with the usual amount
of dissatisfied players still unsigned . . . The Cardinals still:haven't
signed Richie Allen, and that could be a problem . .. Some signed
players are dissatisfied, such as the Mets' Ron Swoboda, who thinks
his salary is so low, he hasn't let it be made public . ". The big
problem concerns the Detroit Tigers' Denny McClain and gambling
. If McClain's suspension materializes to a year, or even life, the
Tigers will have problems replacing 55 wins for 2 years work . . .
The pennant races should be exciting this year, with several big
trades being made, and each division, except possibly the AL west,
should have 4 teams capable of winning their division . , on
baseball and other -sports--including my predictions next term.
