Marijuana laws are ridiculous,

isn't marijuana at least put on

THE NIT TANYCIIB
Their Cry Is From Hunger
...Their Plea is For Help
by
. Doug Brower and Eric Walker
Picture a small, lonely, disease
ridden country somewhere in a
forgotten corner of the globe; its
people half-crazed with starva
tion, and bordering on the brink
of despair. A small child reaches
his hand upward to his mother for
a scrap of food, but there is no
food to be given; follow the blank
look in the face of this child, the
pitiful stare from eyes that have
seen and gone through too much
even to be able to cry. Picture
the silent acceptance of tragedy
as a way of life. Imagine not look
ing to the future but rather grasp
ing for a, hold on the present, not
living one day at a time but hop
ing to receive the help to be able
to live one day. PICTURE HOPE
LESSNESS.
Switch your focus to a prosper
ous, carefree, stable country, the
center of attention of the entire
world; the bulk of its people suc
cessful, their stomachs always
full or over-full, content and able
to achieve the luxuries of life.
PICTURE IRONY. See yourself
as one of these people and. ima
gine wasting more in your life
than the people of the decadent
country receive or hope to receive
in theirs. Picture this contrast as
real, pitifully real, for it is. This
destitute country is Biafra and
its people desperately need your
help. As a member of the prosper
ous country you are able to give
this aid. Sacrifice some of your
luxuries so that the children of
Biafra won't have to sacrifice their
necessities. Picture yourself help-
You think to yourself as you miss
it and the cycle begins again.
Sincerely yours,

"The ultimate purpose of LE
MAR, is to get all Federal, state,
and local laws prohibiting the use
of marijuana changed. At present,
such laws in toto make - the
possession or sale of Cannabis a
crime punishable, in some instan
ces, by penalties more severe than
those for murder." 3
Most everyone is in agreement
that even if marijuana isn't legal
ized that the present laws govern
ing it are way too harsh.
"Under federal law and in some
states, marijuana is classified
with powerful narcotics like her
ion. Possession under federal law
is punishable by two to ten years'
imprisonment for a first offense.
A number of people urge the legal
izing of marijuana on the grounds
that it is relatively harmless;
some others argue that prohibi
tion of sales to minors, as in the
case of cigarettes and liquor is
sufficient _ control. Some who op
pose legalizing • its use would
nevertheless remove it from the
category. of :`thard narcotics' and
thus. lessen the : penalties for pos
