(University Park, Pa.)
If he ever gobbles up real estate like he gobbles up football
yardage. Penn State's Charlie Pittman will end up a land baron.
As a real estate and insurance major at Penn State, the fleet
footed halfback spent most of last summer working as an appren
tice in his home state of Maryland as a part of his requirements for
graduation.
He says he devoted most of his
time to selling insurance and
very little to real estate, but
you'll have a hard time convinc
ing the Midshipmen of Navy.
The way he played football
last Saturday it looked like he
not only owned the stadium but
all of Annapolis and Maryland
as well, especially that choice
piece of land known as the end
zone.
Pittman had the greatest day
of his career, gaining 176 yards
in 19 carries and scoring two
touchdowns, one on a spectacular
58-yard spring.
' The 45-22 triumph over Navy
was Penn State's 20th straight
game without defeat.
For Pittman it was as much a
personal victory as a team con
quest. Among the goals he has
set for himself are: to help Penn
State go undefeated for the sec
ond straight year, to gain more
than 1.000 yards and to surpass
his record of 14 touchdowns of
last year.
"If I can do that I'll be com
pletely satisfied," he told re
pori:ers aftcr the Navy game.
Ironically, among the 28,796
fans to witness the game at
Navy was Lenny Moore, whose
touchdown record Pittman broke
last year.
Pittman has Often been com
pared to Moore and even wears
the same numbef (24) that Len
ny wore as a Baltimore Colt.
"You do your thing, I did
mine,", Moore told Pittman Sat
u.r6.y. "You're bigger than me.
There's no sense comparing
things."
The Nittany Lions got a big
lift from sophomore running
backs Lydell Mitchell and Fran
co Harris and Pittman talked
about their effect on his recup
eration from leg and ankle prob
lems.
"You heal a whole lot faster
when you have competition like
we have on this team," he said.
Unfortunately, Charlie injured

Malkin, Stoner
Added to Staff
As the number of students increases, so must the fac
ulty. In the physical education department, the Behrend
Campus has added two new faces. They are those of Mr.
Martin Malkin and Mr. Clarence Stoner.
Mr. Malkin is replacing Mr.
Roger Sweeting who has taken a
leave of atcence, to further his
studies, as the basketball coach.
Coach Malkin feels that it won't
be easy for him to match last
Year's undefeated record. He was
born and raised in New York City
and received his Master's degree
at Brooklyn College. He played
basketball while in school and in
various leagues after graduation.
He then taught tennis and coached
basketball in public schools before
coming to Behrend.
Basketball season will begin
with the first game on November
25. Tryouts and nractice will com
mence on October 15.
Mr. Stoner, the new baseball
coach, is an alumnus of Penn
State. While at University Park
he played varsity baseball three
out of four undergraduate years.
After receiving his Bachelors de
gree, he played in the minor lea
gue with the Oakland Athletics for
2 years. Then he returned to Penn
State for graduate work and he
will now be teaching physical ed
ucation and be heading the base
ball department at Behrend.
The Nittany Cub would like to
welcome the new coaches and
wish them the best of luck dur
ing the coming year.
his knee again in the first Pl,p ,
of the game against Colorado.
However, the Lions proved they
aren't a one man team by rolling
through with a 27-3 victory,
maintaining their undefeated rec
ord.
