As many people know, • the symbol. of
our university is the Nittany Lion. But
few, if any, know the-history behind the
choice of this symbol. The following is
an article taken from a brochure issued
through University Park, entitled, "Penn
State Football 168"...

'Princeton campus two bronze
tigers. These suggested the
need for a Penn State athletic
symbol, so students chose a
mountain lion, once said to
have roamed the .Central4lenn—
sylvania mountains. Because
Penn State is loCated in the
Nittany Valley at the foot of
Mt. Nittany, the lion was des—
ignated as a Nittany LiOn. The
word Nittany evolved from a
local legend about a Indian
maiden named Nita Alee. .
There may be readers whO do not know
exactly what the Nittany Lion looks like.
For these unenlightened, I suggest they
refer to the pictures on
. the doors in the
Residence Hall or to those on the doors
