Study
At the first of a series of
hearings, the State Board of Ed
ucation heard testimony concern
ing the Fieald-Hobson Associates'
reccommendations that seven Co: ,- -
monwealth Campuses be converted to community
colleges and that others mere or b e r sad_
out. Board members Mr. Jam e s Rowland,
sail Rose, Dr. Leonard Wolf, and Mr.
Rea followed each testimony with -uestion-

The report proposed that Behr end Le
.converted to a regional college and the two
year associate degree program be discontin
ued. Members- of the Behrend Advisory Board
and officials of Reed Manufacturing, General
Electric and General Telephone protested the
report's suggestion that t he associate pro
gram be phased out, describing it as invalu
able to them. John Herbert of G Pn. Te 1.
explained that "Behr end ready to fill
the four year college status when the co-Inu
nity was ready" and "it is highly
that Behrend remain part of Penn State."

and the University's Board of Trustees, wa s
Thomas F. Bates, Vice President of Planning.
Mr. Bates summarized the five page testimony
and informed the Board that the "University
was in disagreement with most of t h e find
ings and recommendations of the Hcald-Hobs on
report." Mr. Bates also informed the 3card
that he would present the testimony a t al
hearings in order to reassure the public of
the University's stand.

Besides being represented in Ss3-A, resi
dent students hone to elect their own offic
ers to dorm councils. These Counselors will
work along with the S3A in dealing with any
problems of resident students and in planning
any activities. According to Mrs. Frederick,
Resident Community Co-ordinator, the first
such planned activity is a dinner, Thursday,
September 26, with Mr. John director
of the Erie Philharmonic, as guest of honor.
Any interested student is invited to attend
t he after-dinner discussion on music in t h e
11 bedin at 7p.m. in the
Erie ,z, r?.
dormitory lounse.
The new dorm is 0n.1,7 the first of five
residence halls -:hich will eventually be
grouped behind the RUE. Improvements such as
these a: e tangible evidence of Behr end's
growing importance among the Penn State Com
monwealth Campuses.
