ICARUS
Out of the world of Greek mythology come
two interesting figures in the form of Daedalus
and his son, Icarus. It seems that these two
men migrated from Athens to Crete after
Daedalus managed to become jealous and subsequent
ly murdered on of his pupils. (He was an archi
tect and a sculptor.) Once they arrived in
Crete they made quick work of offending the
king and found themselves thrown in jail. Now,
understandably, they did not go for the jail
scene in a big way and plotted their escape.
Daedalus went to work and contrived two pair of
wings made out of wax (probably from the seals
of his fan mail) and feathers„(from their pil
lows/no doubt) (Mythological heros are very
practical.) and the two of them tool off for
Sicilly at the first streak of dawn. They were
flying with ease until Icarus's curosity got
the best of him, and against his father's bet
ter judgement he flew up to get a closer look
at the sun. This idol searching proved to be
his doom, however, because it did not take long
for the sun to meltthe wax on his wings. Icarus
was last seen falling into the sea, wax dripping
from his feathered wings.
At this point you are probably wondering
what all this has to do with a literary contest.
Possibly you can identify with our poor Icarus
if you think abstractly for just a moment.
illlft
How many times have you tried to do something
and have failed? How many times have you attemp
ted something against your parents wishes, only
to get stung? But the point is that you do
not give up.
The power of youth is the ability to pick
themselves up after failing, and start again.
No matter how many times youth "falls into the
sea" they have the stamina and the determination
to swim for shore and help.
Hoy many times have you been very moved
by some force or felt strongly about an idea,
belief or just had something to say, but never
wrote it down because you feared it would be
inadequate or unworthy? The Behrend Campus
publishes a magazine for people who feel just
like you. It is called Icarus because it is for
people who have tried and failed many times,
but still have the determination to try again.
The contents of Icarus are ideas, thoughts and
feelings of everyday Behrendites„ often writ
ten in everyday language, for the common reader.
Write down your opinions and ideas, and
submit them to Mr. Turner or Eileen Bowden for
entrance into the first annual tri-college jud
ging contest. Winners will receive their prizes
at the Honors and Awards Banquet in June.
T , Tinning literary pieces will be published in
Icarus.
