In accordance with regulations prescri
bed by the Selective Service Military Act of -
1967, University officials no longer will re
port class standing nor grades of students to
Selective Service Local Boards.
The legislation also provides for student
deferment to be based primarily on enrollment
of the student and normal progress toward his
degree.
The legislation also provides for the
discontinuance of the Selective Service
College Qualification Test, as well as class
standing, as a basis for deferment.
To assist the student in requesting an
undergraduate student deferment, the Selective
Service System has devised SSS form 104,
which was made available to all students at
the University at registration for the Fall
Term. Copies also are available at the office
of the students local board, or any of the - NITTANY CUB TO PRESENT CHRISTMAN DANCE
local boards, or at the Records Office, 114
Shields Bldg. at the University.
The undergraduate completes and files
this form with his local board, filing the
form only one time while he is a student.
It is not filed each term nor each year.
The student seeking deferment also
completes as a part of his registration, or
may do so at the Record Office, 144 Shields
Bldg., a No. 3 card requesting the Records
Office to keep his local board informed on
his status.
The first report the Uri.versity will
complete under the new legislation will be
a report this month to the local board of
each student who has completed the No. 3
card advising the board of the student's
full-time enrollment.
Next October, following the close of the
current academic year on September 24, 1968,
the University agair will report, advising
the local board as to whether or not the
student is a full-time student, including
expected graduation date. The report also
will include a statement on the progress he
has made during the year toward his degree.
If the student is enrolled in a four
year program, it is explained, he is expected
to have completed 25 per cent of his degree
requirements by the end of the first 12-
month academic year; 50 per cent by the end of
the second academic year, etc. Tor those in
a :five-year program, 20 per cent should be
completed by the end of the first academic
year.
- The academic year, it is emphasized, is
a 12-month period, rather than a September.
to June periOd.
In addition to the end-of-the-academic

- year report, the University files a report,
for the local board on each student who has
completed the Selective Service Information
card when the student's status changes,
such as at the time of his graduation, with
drawal, or drop from the University.
The provisions of the new legislation
were outlined to Pennsylvania college repre
sentatives at a series of meeting held last
week in Philadelphia, Harrisburg, and
Pittsburgh. The meetings were arranged by
the Penna. Association of Colleges and
Universities and conducted by officials of the
State Selective Service office.
It was explained at the meeting that a
student who receives an induction notice,
which was issued while he was a full-time
student, may be eligible for a postponement
of induction or the classification of I-S.
Requests for such deferments, or any
deferments, change of classification, or
appeals are a matter between the student
concerned and his local board and inquiry
concerning them should be directed to the
local board.
The staff of the Tiffany Cub will sponsor
a Christman dance on December 16, 1967 . . The
name of the dance is the Christmas Cotillion,
and Teddy Armen will play from 9 to 1 with
several intermissions so everybody can take a
breather. The cost is a meager $3:00 per
couple and the affair will be semi-formal.
The place will be the RUB ballroom provided it
is finished in time, (See RUB article) but if
not Erie Hall will be lavishly decorated for - -
your dancing pleasure. The dance is by
invitation to Behrend Students and faculty only.
