    LETTERS TO 'ilir.; EDITOR:
I just read a statement that there is
no college atmosphere on campus. This is
definitely true. I think there is a way
to rectify this problem, though.
The first step is to recognize the
problem. Behrend, being mainly a commut
er campus, lacks the opportunity for stu
dents to really get to know a lot of other
students because no extra time is spend on
campus. If you're through with a class,
you leave; and you don't get here till
ten minutes before your first class be
gins. Free periods are used for study.
There is no binding agent -- the person
attends classes, leaves, and isn't con
cerned about anyone he doesn't meet in
the course of the day. Why should he?
Half of campus life is dorm living,
which we don't.have. The dorm girls,
for example, are more or less a united
group.j They even get recognition in
the yearbook as a group.
We need a binding agent like this.
What? Fraternities and sororities!
Why can't Behrend have frats? The
easiest way to accomplish this is to
go to the main campus frats and ask
for local branches to be established.
Some of the frets on the main campus
would be glad to have additional mem
bers. It would also be an asset to
belong to a branch fret because when'
you transferred you'd have a friendly
group to more right in with.
One major problem would be build
ing frat houses. The frat on the main
campus could help out, the gups on
our campus could raise some funds,
and the fret could float a loan for
the rest. Many kids from out of town
would rather live in a frat house among
friends than board out with strangers.
And we need more than one fret.
Even just two battling frets would
create spirit on campus. That
spirit would act as the binding
agent to make Behrend a college
campus instead of a high school. ..,
Now that a letter dealing
with the S.G.A. "farce" has been
submitted to the Cub, I • d like
to comment on this "farce" if I
may.
I must whole-heartedly agree
that the S.G.A. is a farce. It
has no choice but to assume such
an image. No organization can
operate efficiently to represent
a body of students who just don't
give a damn about our campus.
The majority of students at
Behrend act like a tribe of child
ish brats who are too lazy to exett
themselves. They seem to want
entertainment and campus Improve
ments handed to them on a silver
platter. Let's face it, gang --
Behrend is not much more than a
continuation of high school, and
the students have made it that
way.
I would like to point out that,
not everyone is responsible for
this condition. The Cub, Circle
and Boosters' Club have all
sponsored unsuscesful jammies.
The culture series has been a flop.
Psi Sigma Upsilon has sponsored
several fine, but unattended
programs. Even the athletic events
haven't merited attention from the
students.
