Students across the nation are re
sponding to the challenges of our
time. This has been evidenced through
involvement in the Peace Corps, the
Volunteers in Service to America, the
Civil Rights movement, the Student
lion-Violent Coordinating Conmittee,
and even blood donations. Students
are demonstrating more and more that
they are interested in national and
international problems.
HoWever„ there is one area of
involvement that University students
have left relatively untouched -- •
that of involvement in the local
community. Local problems are
particularly pressing in the cities,
where students are only slowly
realizing the part they can play in
lessening the problems of modern
urban life. Erie is no exception
to these problems.
The Booker T. Washington Center
is initiating a Community Exchange
Program to get the students and
residents of the Erie area in an
organized involvement toward building
a more productive community. The
Community Exchange Program consists
of numerous individual programs: a
tutoring program on a one-to-one
basis with the volunteer and person
being tutored meeting two hours
weekly; a fine arts program with
persons being needed to conduct
group sessions in drama, dance,
children's theater, art, music; a
group work and counseling program, with
teenagers, activities being cultural
excursions and social affairs; and an
adult vocational training program with
volunteers to teach or assist teaching
such subjects as communication
skills ( reading, grammar, spelling,
writing), math skills, speech,
typing, filing, and business machines.
Involvement with the Community
Exchange Program is one way in which
Behrend students can show a real
interest in solving local problems and
contributing to community growth.
