Monday, May 4, 1964 Sports by 1964 Behrend baseball, off to a somewhat less than bragable be ginning, commenced with a: CRUSHING OF THE CUBS IT STARTED AS A CHERRY DAY BUT SOON ALL HOPES WERE PUT AWAY. ON THE FIELD THE CUBS DID GO, BUT NARY AN INCH THEIR STATURE DID GROW. HERBIE, COACH, AND THE GANG ALL EXPERIENCED A WANTFUL PANG. TO FEEL AS THIS WAS NOT A SIN FOR THEIR DESIRE WAS BUT TO WIN. THE TEAM WAS UP, ALTOONA WOULD CRAWL, OR SO WE THOUGHT 'TIL WAS HEARD: "PLAY BALL!" WHEN THE GAME BEGAN THE CUBS WERE TERRORS BUT, OH, MY GOD, SUCH AN AVALANCHE OF ERRORS! PITCHING WAS SUPREME, THAT CAN'T BE DOUBTED, SAVE FOR THE NUMEROUS ONES THAT WERE CLOUTED OVER THE ROAD AND INTO THE TREES. NO QUICKER WAY TO BE BROUGHT TO YOUR KNEES! BATS SPEAK LOUD. USUALLY QUITE ORAL, BUT WE'D HAVE BEEN EMBARRASSED SAVE FOR STORLL. THIS IS DISGUSTING, ONLY ONE HIT PER GAME, AN ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS WAY TO GAIN FAME. LYNN AND GREG AND A FEW OTHERS REMAINED WITNESSES ALL TO A PRIDE SORELY STRAINED. BUT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN Dlio.totlßENT, GREATLY ALTERED, HAD OFFENSE AND DEFENSE ENDURED, NOT FALTERED. Although this may be a rather light-hearted treatment of events transpired, the situation is a trifle more serious. The baseball team is at present comprised of twelve players. It's pretty difficult to get a lot done with only twelve guys of which only five have ever played any organized baseball and half of whom must now play a position that they have never previously played. It is certainly a shame that such a condition exists, but what is even more pathetic is the atti tude maintained by the people most capable of correcting such a condition. All that is ever heard from these people and for that matter from this Campus in general is mockery of performance by our ath letic teams or what a crummy job the coach is doing. Why don't these guys so quick to bitch come out and help correct this situation that they seem to find so ridiculous? Because you're not good enough? How about letting the coach tell you that. There isn't a position on the team that is sewed up. Because you haven't got the time? If you examine your time allocations I'll bet you'll find that if you spent half of the time studying that you do goofing off you'd have the time. Or maybe the knot in the apron strings is still too tight. Think about it and see if you can find a way to swing it. I realize that there are exceptions to every rule, but if the shoe fits you should at least try it on. There is no question but that you could strengthen the team and you can probably use the exercise, besides that—you might enjoy it. THE NITTANY CUB Zahniser CANDIDATES SPEAK As a public service The Nittany Cub would like to offer the fol lowing statements from your can didates for the presidency of the S.G.A. 1964-65: Terry Totten, now in her third term as an active representative serving in the capacity as secre tary, is seeking your vote for president. This is what she had to say: The purpose of the Student Government Association is to promote the student welfare and to coordinate activities on campus. To accomplish this effectively the S. G. A. needs a president who is ex . perienced and well-acquaint ed with the inner workings of the S. G. A. Having served in several organizations as president in High School. and having served as secretary this year, I feel that I can fulfill these two qualifica tions. Because I am exper ienced and quite familiar with the S.G.A. functions I feel that I could do a good job as president and would try hard to bring more inter esting and successful activ- ities to our campus. Bill Harding is another S. G. A. member just elected to fill out the remaining portion of the Spring Term. Here is his state ment: As a presidential candidate for the Student Government Assoc iation of Behrend Campus, I will not make any election promises that can not be fulfilled, for this would not benefit the Campus or myself. I can only say that if I am elected, I will use honest and sincere judgement in any matter that is brought before the S. G. A. while I am in office. I will use the knowledge I have gained the past Winter and Spring Terms, while serving as a member for to see that the entire student SUMMER JOBS for STUDENTS NEW S'64 directory lists 20,000 summer job openings in 50 states. Before a good student govern ment can successfully represent the student body, however, stu dent interest on the campus, its activities, organizations and pro grams must increase. Leadership alone can not build a better campus atmosphere, the students themselves must take an active part in programs already estab lished. Tom Bundy, the present trea surer. made the following state ment: As a candidate for the presi dency of the Student Govern ment Association of the Behrend Campus. I believe that I could serve in the best interests of you, the students. If elected. I would use my ex perience and knowledge obtained by serving in the capacity of treasurer of the S.G.A., for the past year to bring you more ac tivities. which better utilize the resources that are available to us here at Behrend. I believe, that of the candidates, I could serve you best or I would not be run ning, but it is up to you, the voter, to gather information and make your own decision. There fore, I would be glad to discuss with you any aspect of the S.G.A. upon which you would like clar ification or my point of view.
