Spring, and thoughts are turned to baseball. The young men of
Behrend Campus are no exception to this "time-worn" expression; thus
we find the campus invaded by strange warriors carrying bats and
arrayed in colorful blue hats, white uniforms, and black spikes. At
present, the Behrend roster numbers approximately twenty lovers of
America's biggest sport. Under the directorship of Jim Gallagher,
probably Behrend's - most able coach in a decade, the team may pull a
few surprises in a hotly-contested Western Junior College League.
Coach Gallagher commented recently: "If we can develop straight up
the middle, we'll be fairly well set." Recently, in their opener, the
Behrend nine encountered arch-rival, Altoona, on the Cubs diamond,
culminating in a victory for the downstaters. L. Dunst battled coura
geously, fanning 10, but to no avail. Dunst poses to be one of the better
members on Gallagher's pitching staff, experienced playing junior
legion ball for a number of years, and capable, his forte being a sliding
curve. Williams and Hess of Altoona combined talents to strike out
17 men. The contest remained on an even level until the sixth inning
when Williams of Altoona scored the first tally via the error route.
The scoring concluded in the eighth inning with Altoona's centerfielder,
Strittmeter, crossing home plate a second time for the winners.
At this point, hitting appears to be the weak spot for the men of
Behrend. "Mac" McCallister, at present, looms as the top slugger,
obtaining 2 out of 3 hits that Behrend mustered at the first game.
The team is green, yet possesses that certain quality known as
"guts", and the season is still young. We are confident that Gallagher
and Company will cause much chaos among the teams of the Western
Junior
. College League. Remember, the team needs support; so back
that team of yours be glad you have one.
Members of the team are J. Brown, P. Ottoson, B. Curry, A. Mc-
Callister, L. Dunst, J. Perkins, G. Levenson, A. Coombes, J. McMahon,

TERM—from P. 1
Cirientation Week has been moved
back from Sept. 24 to Sept. 17.
An advantage of the plan would
be that the fall term would end on
Dec. 7, giving students an extra
week of Christmas vacation. There
will still be a one day Thanksgiv
ing recess on Nov. 23.
The change was made by Presi
dent Eric A. Walker upon the
recommendation of a faculty and
administration committee repre
senting all segments of the Uni
versity. The committee was set up
by Walker to study the difficulties
arising from the late beginning of
the fall term.
At the outset, the main problem
was how students could attend the
first; football game, since it was be
fore registration.
