Sportsman Of The Week The Nittany Cub wishes to intro duce' its second Sport Personality of the Week. His name is Dave Nielsen, a freshman from Acad emy, who has performed brilliantly as a member of Behrend’s basket ball team. He played basketball for Academy for three years, starting for the Varsity in his eleventh year, and playing first string in'his Senior year. He had the honor of being selected on the second team representing the city of Erie for the year 1960. During his brilliant play for the Behrend team, he has been shoot ing at a 32% clip from the field; 57% from the foul line and at the rate of 16.3 point average for the first three games. And to top this off, his main value to the team has been in his rebounding strength which has netted forty rebounds in three games. Congratulations, Dave, and keep up the good work! Sportscope Basketball made its initial ap pearance into the. 1960-61 athletic schedule as our team traveled to Ashtabula on November 30. In con test with Ashtabula, the scoreboard showed that Behrend was behind four points at half-time. As the third quarter started, the game re mained as anyone’s battle. But, as the game came within its closing minutes, the height of the Basket eers from Ohio prevailed in its closing minutes and Ashtabula came out on top with a 72-56 score. Dave Nielsen took scoring laurels with 17 points, and Tom Fye fol lowed with 13 markers.' Two days later, Behrend’s bas ketball team hosted McKeesport. Under the bright lights of Erie Hall, a commendable turnout of sports fans,, marked by college spirit in its truest form, watched the home team go down to its second defeat. As the buzzer sounded for the third quarter to begin, the score cards read that Behrend was ahead by two baskets. Then disaster struck the hardwood at Erie Hall. Before the Behrend rooters could happily set pen to paper, McKeesport scored nine straight baskets to command the lead. Behrend switched from a 2-1-2 zone defense to a man to man defense in hope of containing this spontaneous tide. The switch of defense helped a little, but Mc- Keesport was not to be denied the victory, which it received by a 72- 60 count. Scene - at the McKeesport-Beh- rend game. Bruce Clark makes another basket. By HAKRY MILNE The following day, a twice beat en team traveled to Dußois' in quest of its first victory of the newly crowned season. And the trip was not in vain as Behrend, char acterized by a great team effort, overcame a half-time deficit of 16 points and went on to victory as Behrend rolled up 69 points to 58 for Dußois. Behrend started out its third contest very cold as they only scored 4 points to Dubois’ 27. With only four minutes left in the first half, Coach Gallagher parlayed for a full court press against Dußois. This was very successful as Beh rend came within 16 points of Du- Bois as the buzzer sounded the end of the first half. The game con tinued and it was a see-saw battle until only six minutes remained in the game. Then, with the score knotted 54-54, the taste of victory nourished the famined pride of Behrend’s basketball team, and they went on to enjoy their first meal of victory by the score of 69-58.
