PROF. A. A. HODGE ON THE ATONEMENT.
ATONEMENT, by Prof. Archibald A. Hodge, Pro
fessor in Western Theological Seminary at Alle
gheny. Philadelphia: Presbyterian Board of
Publication. 12mo. pp. 440.
•
We are glad to see a restatement and ddfeiice
the view of the Atonement held by h considers
; and influential phrt of the Evangelical Chureh.
is time such treatises were forthcoming. Dr.
late work—singularly misnamed the
icarious Atonement," was 'a samitions to the
angelical Church to such a tiOl'lr tis:that in
ich Prof Hodge has engaged, It will greatly
to his reputation 10 a• clear „thinker and .wri
a vigorous and able controversialist and a
.ned theologian. Thch thinks of men in the
irch of all shades of opinion are due to the .
or. There is much in - the volume which ex-:
y meets anik i expreesei our own views, ,and
.e in fact than, we expected to see. As be-
Bushnell,.YoUng and Robertson of Brigh
on the one hand, and Prof • Hodge on the
we - uniesitatingly range ourselves with
representative of Evangelicaldectrine Oil this
Ld and vital matter, this core cif,all Christian
dogy. But we feel no-pressure of conviction
elling us to choose'between Pref. : llo'4e and
ter men at least as ripe, as,orthodox and 'as
Lngelical as he. To our minds, the stringent
, s of our author•are not necessary to the es
le of the Evangelical view 'of a vicarious
latent, but are rather an exidanatiMi of, the
,ncholy and disastrous rebellion, of men like
well, Young and Robertson against the
de scheme. We make these remarks becalm
book is a distinctively controversial and
Lncetonian book ; is issued bY : authority4tid
:rented as a standard of doCirine euits subject. , .
is from the., press of the Presbyterian' Board
Publication: In the piesent; relations of the
great Presbyterian bodies Eff this country, its
me under such auspices cannot but prove un-
Innate. The very alphabet,of, the negotiations
reunion is the recognition.of the perfect equal
of both parties. And yet here, in the midst
the negotiations, the brand of heresy is attempt
to be put upon one of.the parties by an official
of the other. The Publication Board of the
Ler branch virtually say, either' there is to be
reunion, or the reunited Church must take
:of. Hodge as the exponent of ,orthodoxy upon
e Atonement. They would scarcely issue a
istly book, only to be thrown out by a commit
of revision. The publication or the work by
ivate enterprise would have signified nothing
this regard. Its issue by the 0. S. Board is
anti-union movement; a yesumption of,hoatil
ies in the midst of'a trace.. -
We expect to speak more particularly of the .
intents of the book in another' connection.

Although Dr. Kennard did almost nothing,

his spirit was so childlike and yet so wise tf,win

his worth, and would •feelitself.irdpoveriShed in

goes beyond individuals or localities, to society
itself, which she takes the opportunity to picture
in its various epochs in a most interesting and
instructive way. Her subjects, too, are such,
and so treated, as to illustrate and commend the
virtues of piety, domestic goodness and benevolence
in women. The illustrations have a look of life,
but none of them surprise or dazzle us with their.
beauty. That may be the fault of onr.poor taste.
Perhaps Dr. Wayland Was similarly at ;fault in
regard to the peeresses of England; of whom,
after a gold opportunity to obserie, them," he f
writes : .'][ saw none of that baronial a.spect of
