THE WAR.
SHERNAN.
Our news from Sherman and his army is
now direct and satisfactory. lie is before
Savannah, and in communication with the
`fleet. Rear Adaiiral Dahlgren, who had
stationed steamers at different points to ob
tain intelligence, reports from Port Royal
Harbor, on the 12th, a line brought Ws
scout from Gen. Howard, commanding one
of the columns, as follows : "We have met
with perfect success thus far. The troops
are in fine spirits, and near • by." Captain
Duncan of the Dandelion was the bearer of
the message. He states in addition; that
our forces were in contact with the rebels a
few miles outside of Savannah, and that the
army was not in want of anything. The Ad
miral has all along kept himself in prepara
tion to cooperate with Sherman whenever
the latter should make his appearance.
The country is just beginning to learn the
magnitude of the plan, of which Sherman's
march has been the central point of inter
est. The consummate `strategy which de
coyed Hood into Tennessee, purposely allow
ing him to push up to Nashville; the co-op 7
eration of Gen. Canby, slipping expeditions
behind him from a totally unexpected quar
ter to embarras his retreat into Georgia;
the naval preparations on the Atlantic side;
the seeming quiet of Gen. Grant's army; the
last raid South of Petersburg to'embarfas
rebel communications in that quarter, de
::'/ayed until just the right• Moment, and the
fresh work got up for Gen. Lee's, attention
in other quarters, are all parts of one stupen
idous scheme. For once in the history of the
war, treachery did not come into play. The
secrecy of the movement was well preserved.
The rebel government was completely baffled
and up to this hour, not a single false step
has marred the enterprise. The long march
of the army was conducted according to the
plan. There was no turning out' f the way
to take towns; no stopping to waste-ammu
nition in fights of,no material consequence,
The army lived 'for the mdst part on the
country, destroyed property
. wfiere military
reasons for such destruction existed, and
now comes out upon the coast side, well pro 7
visioned and supplied with ammunition.
SHEEHAN'S. DISPATCH
Since preparing the above, Sherman's
official despatch has come to hand. We give
it below, premising that Fort McAllister is
on the Ogechee river, fifteen miles south
west of Savannah. It is dated " 'Board
Dandelion," Ossabitw Sound', 11.50 P. M.
Dec. 13. and is as follows : To-day at 5
M., General Hazen's division Of the 15th
Corps carried Port McAllister by assault,
capturing its entire garrison and stores.
This opened to us the Ossabaw Sound, and
I pulled down to this gunboat to communi
'-date with the fleet. Before opening commu
nication, we had completely destroyed all
the railroads leading into Savannah, and in
vested the city. The left is on the Savannah
river, three miles above the city, and the.
right is on the Ogeechee river, at King's
Bridge.
The army is in splendid order and equal to
'anything. The weather has been fine and
supplies abundant. Our march was most
'agreeable, and we were not at all molested
by -guerrillas. We reached Savannah three
days ago, but owing to Fort McAllister we
could not communicate;
----vreave already captured two boats on the
Savannah river, and have prevented. their
gurboats from coming down. I estimate
the population of Savannah at 25,000, and
m'en'ds
at 15,000. Gen. Hardee com-
We have not lost a wagon on thaTrip;b - ur
have gathered in a large supply of mules,
negroes, horses, etc., and our teams are in ,
far better condition than when we started.
My first duty will be to clear the army of
surplus negroes, mules, and horses.
We have ut'erly destroyed over 200 miles
of railroad and consumed stores and provis
ions that were essential to Lee's and
Hood's armies.
The quick work made with Fort ktcAllis-.
ter and the opening , of communication with
our fleet and consequent independence for
supplies dissipate all their boasted threats to
head me off and starve the army.
I regard Savannah as already gained.
A telegram from the war - Department of
the 17th, adds :
Despatches have been received to-day from,
Gen. Foster, who had a personal interview;
on the morning of WedresdaY; the 14th inst.,
with General Sherman, at Fort McAllister ;
which had been taken by assault the pre
ceding ,
day.
, • Savannah was closely besieged, and its
' capture, with the rebel forces there, was con
fidently expected. It was to 'be summoned
in two days, and if not surrendered Sherman
would open his batteries upon it.
General Foster 'reports that, Sherman's
army is in splendid condition, having lived, -
on its march, on the turkeys, chickens,
sweet potatoes, and other good things of the
richest part of Georgia. The march was
feebly resisted.
ARMY OF THE POTOMAC
General Warren's expedition, of which
mention was made last week, has proved a
great success. The most remote point reach
ed. was forty miles South of Petersburg. A. let
ter from Head Quarters, Dec. 11, says: "It
was known that the enemy were procuring
large supplies for their troops by way of the
Weldon Railroad to Stony creek, whence
they were wagoned to Petersburg. The
cavalry force sent there some ten days ago
not being able effectually to stop their oper
ations, the sth Corps, with Gregg's cavalry
and the 3d Division of the 2d Corps, were de
tailed to put a. atop to it by destroying the
railroad as far South as Hicksford, and op
posite that station also." After giving the
events of the enterprise in 'detail, the letter
thus sums them up: "The move may be
considered as one of the most successful of
the campaign, and reflects honor not only on
the originator, but on those to whom its ex
ecution was entrusted. A most effective
blow, has been dealt the enemy by the..
destruction of some fifteen miles of rail
road which they were using extensively,
some hundred cars passing over it everyday,
loaded with supplies . The track was-torn
,1 - up, the. ties. piled in heaps, with dry :wood
_ from the adjacent fences,
and set on fire,
with the rails on top, the heat bending and ,
- twisting them in every shape.—All the de
pots on the route were ,burned, as well as
numerous mills, barns, and dwellingt from
which the occupants had fled, or from the
cover of which guerrillas had fired on our
troops. One was caught with a gun near
where a shot had just been fired, and it is
said the troops hung him near the Nottaway
river, Our. loss in the entire trip will not
exceed forty or fifty in killed and wounded,
besides a few stragglers, who' were captur
ed."

AMONG.the later applicants for public.favor
we notice the "Cotter Farm Oil Company"
of Philadelphia, whose prOspectus will-be
found in our columns.
Its lands are situated in the Alleghany river
region which now presents a similar appear
ance to Oil Creek ; for developments hair's
proven :that oil is, not, confined to a small
locality like Oil Creek,.but, extends for miles
in all directions—zno one knows how great a
distance,`.-. ;
The Cotter Farm Oil Company is formed
uptin a really safe basis, and the names of
gentlemen -coneeted with it, and the manner
ducted is 'a guarantee that theinterests of
tie stockholders will be first coneidered in
all their operations. We refer our readers
to their iorespectus for detailed information
in reference to tlieir property, only remark
ing that on one of the tracts besides the
-timber, - which is of the. best description,
there are large deposits.of Bituminous Coal.
On the former mentioned property—the
" Cotter Farni"—the Company:have.a saw `
mill which is 'already yielding thebia reve
nue equal to an ordinary producing "well:
They have already commenced operat -- ions ,
on, their property,engines being upon ' '
the'
ground, a
nd., five wells being abot4 _to be
immediately sunk, under competent super
intendence.
'One feature which recommends the com
pany to the public, is that they have de
clined to purchase interests in producing
'ldle (which are'liable' at any moment to be
interfered with by the operations of compa
niesin their inimediate locality) for the
•
purpose of giving their stock an apparent,
present vane in the market, and therefore
do not run any risk of having their stock
suddenly depreciated by a decrease in pro
duction of these wells.
