THE CHRISTIAN COMMISSION AT WHITE HOUSE. the battles of \ the last week many ti. ,, :isands oewounded, including a large number of those of the enemy, were a; White House. They were brought there, a distance of twenty lanes, in wago ns and ambulances. They were met on their arrival with food and refreshil drink, by the delegates and agents of the Commission, who after wards rendered invaluable assistance in having theia moved to hospital tents. More than one hundred delegates have ha.•n sent to this one point. Stores are being sent constantly forward, by way of Fortress Monroe and I :l , 'm.ore, its also direst from Washington. The Commission has employed for this pur pose a steam tug, a schooner, and a barge. It has also sent forward to the front 1 , !IT additional teams (three four horse-teams and one ambulance) from the White House, to be constantly em ployed in the transportation of stores .and the carrying of the wounded. In view of these facts, which are but it statement of part of the operations of the Commission at 'this time, we hope that it will be enabled not only to pros ecute su.:•ccssfully the work it has already undertaken, but that it may greatly en large it. Too mach cannot be done, as long as the work performed is so dispro portionate to the wonderful. field to be cultivated. While we welcome, and bid God speed to every other enterprise which seeks to advance the welfare of our armies, it is pre-eminently the duty of Christians to see that this insti tution does not suffer for the means to dispense t.s blessings. It seeks to fulfil the law of love upon the only principle which "i "CM that law its force and obli gation• viz : the glory 'of God. The crowning feature of the history of the terrible civil contest in which we are engaged is, that there is an institution which is Christian, but, 'not sectarian, charitable but not alms-giving, mission ary. but not proslytizing, and patriotic, but not partisan. - G. Jeoinios—Dear Sir : I have been frequently re quested to connect my name with commendations of different kinds of medicines, but regardieg the practice as out of my appropriate sphere, I have in all cases declined; but with a clear proof in various instances, and particularly in my own family, of the use of Dr. Hoofiand'a German Bitters, I depart for once from my usual course, to express my full conviction that, for general debility of the system, and especially for Liver Complaint, it is a safe and satiable preparation. In some cases it may fail; but usually, 1 doubt not, it will be very beneficial to those who suffer from the above causes. Yours, very respectfully, J. H KENNARD, Eighth et., below Cedes, Phila. From Rev. Warren Randolph, Pastor of Baptist Church, Da. C. M. .7m:semi—Dear Sir: Personal experience enables me to say that I regard the German Bitters prepared by you as a most excellent medicine. In cases of severe cord' and general debility I have bee greatly benehtted by the use of the Bitters, and doub? not they will produce similar - effects on others. IFi!!ter, ittstor, of Boxborough Da. JAcssotv---Dear Sir: I feel it due to your excellent preparation—B outland's German Bitters—to add my testimony to the deserved reputation it has obtained. I have for years, at times, been troubled with great disorder in my head and nervous system. I was advised by a friend to try a bottle of your German Bitters. I did so, and experienced great and unex pected relief. My health has been very materially benefitted. I confidently recommend the article where I meet with cases similar to my own, and have been assured by many of their good effects. Respectfully yours, T. WINTER. Rosborough, Pa., December. 1858 From Rev. J. Newton Brot . er t .D.l?„ Editor of the Bttey- clopredia of Religious Knowledge: Although not .disposed to favor or recommend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust of their ingre• dients and effects; I yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation. in tho hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit of others. I do this snore readily in regard to Hoofland's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against them for many years. under the impression that they were chiefly an alco holic mixture. I am indebted to my friend, Robert Shoemaker, Esq., for the removal of this prejudice by proper tests, and for encouragemmit to try them, when suffering from great- and long continued debility. 't he use of three bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief, and restoration to a degree of bodily and mental vigor which I had not felt for six months before, and had almost despaired of regaining. I therefore thank God and my friend for directing me to the use of them, Philada., Jung 2.3, 1881. J. NEWTON BROWN. PARTICULAR NOTICE There are many preparations sold under the name of Bitters, put up in quart bottles, compounded of the cheapest .whiskey or common runs, costing front 20 to 40 cents ye, gallon, the taste disguised by Anise or Coriander Seed. This class of Billet s has caused and will continue to cane as long as they can be sold, hundreds to dte the death of thi drunkard. By their use the system, is kept continually under the in fl uence of alcoholic stimulants of the worst kind, the desire fin liquor is created and kept up, and the result is all the horrors attendant upon a drunkard's life and death. For a Liquor Bitters, we publish the following receipt.
