April 21, 2008 THE CAPITAL TIMES scr iat l i'= - E ==4-z " =-= * Well, this semester is almost over, but this year is still young. We still have a presidential election, a football season and a whole other semester to weather. But for me, this will be my last semester as Editor. Don't worry, I'll still be with the paper, but just as Assistant Editor. Penn State Harrisburg's very own Diana Le will be your new EIC, and I assure you that she will do an even better job than I have. As per tradition, I want to use my last editor's comments to thank the people who have helped me though the year, both with the paper and outside of it First off, Diana. It seems like we have been working together for years. You came to me as a bright eyes copy editor and I promptly promoted you as my assistant. You just have this way of bringing me back down to earth, no matter how much I try to stay with my head in the clouds. You have a knack for journalism and for amazing one- liners (usually aimed at me though) I have seen you blossom from a quiet, introverted copy editor to an ambitious and motivated Assistant Editor. I have no doubt that you will blossom even more next year. Second, Roo (though not second to anything in my life). You got me into this mess and now refuse to get me out. I don't know what I would do without your mother-like advice from making sure that I eat right to keeping me on the right track in life. You have always been there for me and I know you always will Okay people... Urn, there are many things wrong with this picture. Many, many things. For instance, W - 7 1/2. What in tarnation is that? Where is that classroom located? Why does it only rate a half? Is it only half a classroom? Perhaps it has only enough seating for half the class? Or maybe all classes will end once they get to the halfway mark in the standard time. We at the Capital Times would like to know when Penn State stopped being able to afford full classrooms. We know our tuition is helping to fund the university, so perhaps we should be able to afford a whole classroom. But what bothers us the most about this image is that even the spider, the nasty bugger that it is, is fascinated enough to check this room out. Perhaps he thinks that he will only have to build half a web once he gets inside, lessening his workload. Penn State, we are curious as to what stands behind your half a classroom. But only about half of us really care. This will be the last issue for the 2007-2008 Capital Times. Thank you for your dedication and keeping newsprint alive! Of' ) i' C be. I don't know what I'm going to do without you on this paper. You raised the bar of being editor and raised general standards on the paper. You have been my mentor and my best friend for over a year and there are no words to express how much that means to me. It's not even you yelling at me for wanting to build hotels, but what you don't see is that I make decisions largely based on what you would do or think about them. I could go on and on about you but you pretty much know all of this already. Amber- thank you, thank you, thank you for always being yourself. We have an amazing time this year, in and out of the office and I'm pretty bummed that you're going up to the Collegian. You've been a layout lifesaver, and always ask for more to do which just amazes me. I wish you all the luck at UPark. Marty- I don't think anyone else can understand the stresses of working in Harrisburg and also leading a club like you do. You have this special talent of making me laugh and the most insane things, and I thank you for that. I still don't believe that you're a freshman, with all of the ambition and motivation that you have, not to mention maturity. I'm pretty excited that you decided to come on staff next year, which just means that I get to spend more time with you having hilarious debates about the West Wing. Here's to another year of working late into the nights, hobo cereal and may the best man win. Mahoney- I know we fight, a lot, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm going to miss you as the hum on the couch yelling at me to do a better job, because it works. It's not even in the office that you make me a better person, but outside of it. Next year is not going to be the same without you, so you better visit. You're like a big brother to me and I would not change that for anything. 1 wish you all the luck in the real world. Jen- don't leave. Even though you don't actually work on the paper, I'm pretty sure that you're there the same amount of time that I am. I can't thank you enough for helping me out in any way that you could. I don't know who I'm going to get to call me at Bam when something CORRECTIONS We spelled some things wrong. Whoops. is wrong with the paper. I hold you solely responsible for making sure that I was always on time for things and that I went to class, no matter how much I protested. You were an amazing help and I feel bad that Diana doesn't get to have a Jen. The boys- Sarver, Craig, McComas, Aumiller, Khoa, Morgan- Sony for grouping you into one big lump but together you made my life better. I could always count on any one of you to make fun of my lack of common sense or my love life. You all we so grounded and set on just having fun with life that it kept me down to earth. I'm going to miss all of you (except Aumiller, because he's not graduating), I'll never be able to look at a wiffleball the same way again. Ben--aka Snuggles! I really don't know why you still come back each week, but you do, and thanks for that. And thanks for being the only male here during layout week. Your affinity for Ron Paul and obscure references keeps me laughing, and trips to the Middletown library booksale with you keep me.... well rounded? Stay classy. PUNKX!- Why are there so many ostriches?! Even though you got me into a tid bit of trouble, this office would not be the same without you. Thanks for letting me through assignments at you, and for taking smoke breaks with me. Sahar- I know we didn't start out the year on the best of terms but I'm so grateful that we're back on track now. You can accomplish anything that you set your mind to, and usually take me along for the ride. Thanks for sharing my passion for volunteering any free time to charities, I couldn't ask for a better person to work with. You did an amazing job this year in the SGA, even though some turmoil you managed to accomplish things for the student body. I have no doubt that you will do the same thing as THON chair and in the radio station I'm sorry if I missed anyone. There have been so many of you who have made this year amazing by just making me laugh or being there for moral support. I hope everyone finishes out this semester on a good note and has a safe summer! Marin Alice THE CAPITAL TIMES If you are interested in posi tions for the 2008-2009 Capital Times, please con tact DXLSO37@PSU.EDU From the barstoo I IP I Hello everyone!!! Well this is it, the final countdown I hope you are all ready for either graduation or to relax for a few months before this starts all over again. Good luck to all the graduates, including myself who gets to do it in summer. Well done!! So, this is going to be the last time I come at you from the barstool. I thought for a long time about what to write, and figured out that the best lessons you can learn I have already taught you. So I shall review them for you and give you one last piece of wisdom. The most impoi rant lesson is to take care of your bartenders. Treat them with respect and dignity. Do not argue with them if they say you had too much. They are just trying to be that good friend that we all should have in our lives that looks out for us. Listen to them, treat them as people, and watch your time become good times for all. Don't judge a book by its cover. I know you have all heard it before, but take it to heart. It is a big lesson that goes a long way. Take a second and learn before you decide. You never know whom you may become friends with Follow a sports team. Pick a sport, and pick a team. This may sound stupid but sports are one thing a lot of people have in common. To have even minimal knowledge could make or break you in life. In fact, the only reason I get away with stuff at work is because my boss is a Penn State fan, and all you have to do is distract him with football when he catches you eating. Dress to make the statement you want to make. Whether we go back to my scantily clad ladies of last issue or the person heading into a job interview, you have to look like what you want people to believe you to be First impressions are very important, and it starts with the clothes. They do not have to be designer, just know how to put them together to make your statement. Do not pretend that you know it all. To pretend you have the answer for everything is the biggest sign of ignorance, and it lets everyone know that you, in fact, know nothing. If you do know what you're talking about, don't be condescending about it. Just say your piece and be quiet. And be prepared for someone else to challenge you, and argue with grace. Don't be stupid. And the most important piece of advice I can give you is do not spend your entire life sitting on a barstool. That has its place and time and can be great fun. Believe me, I know this. But do not flush all your money and time away sitting in the dark. Because the world keeps moving around you and if you don't pay enough attention, you are going to end up without a penny to your name and extreme sensitivity to sunlight. Live your life. Don't drink it away. And almost as an oxymoron to myself, find a place to unwind when you need to just relax. No one should be all work and no play. That gets you absolutely nowhere. Don't party too hard, but don't forget to party. Otherwise, the people around you are probably going to hate you. Alright kids, it's been fun. Good luck in life!! Drive safe, be safe.
