For Assistant professor of
mathematics Beth Campbell-
Hetrick, teaching runs in the family.
Her mother works as a reading
specialist with elementary school
children and her sister works in
the Dean of engineering’s office at
Drexel.
“I loved teaching high school. I
loved the time in the classroom, but
I found that I missed doing math,”
she said.
Interestingly enough, Hetrick
didn’t always want to be a math
teacher. In fact, she started at
Villanova as a psychology major.
But having decided an interesting
job in the field of psychology right
out of college would be unlikely
without a graduate degree, she
decided to switch her major to
secondary math education. Later,
Hetrick ended up going right to
graduate school anyway.
After graduate school, she
taught high school math at Bishop
McDevitt from 2002 to 2003.
She also helped plan, organize,
implement and teach a SAT math
prep course.
Hetrick then went back for her
Ph.D. before starting a job as an
assistant professor.
“The professor job is a nice
marriage of the two, time in the
classroom and time doing math,”
she said.
Hetrick, only in her second year of
teaching at Penn State Harrisburg,
explained excitedly, “The pure math
work that I do can be applied in so
many different fields in medicine,
engineering, finance. It has pretty
broad applications.”
Having completed her doctoral
thesis on “Continuous Dependence
Results for Inhomogeneous 11l-
Posed Problems,” she knows well
how some skills learned in math
class can also be used in writing.
“Like logic, you need to know
how to structure an argument,” she
said.
She currently teaches Math 140
Calculus with Analytic Geometry
and Math 315 Foundations of
Mathematics.

SGA president served articles

On Oct. 4, during the Student
Court report, Chief Justice
Paul Fogle presented Student
Government President (SGA)
Marques Stewart with Articles of
Impeachment.
The shock of the announcement
could be seen on the faces of the
executive board, but not on the
face of Stewart. “1 took it okay.
I had to continue to keep the
meeting running smoothly. I am the
President.”
Stewart will now undergo
the SGA impeachment process.
According to the SGA Constitution,
a committee will be formed
consisting of three justices and two
executive board members. Stewart’s
committee will have Fogle, Holly
Weichman, and Aame Stefanon
representing the court, and Amanda
Basil, Communications Director
and Amanda Basil, SGA treasurer,
representing the executive board.
The committee will meet to see
if the articles presented are in any
way in violation of the constitution
Every member of the committee
gets a vote. If the committee finds
the articles to not be in violation,
then the impeachment process will

It was prom night. The ride to the
Ritz in downtown Baltimore was
a magnificent
and exciting
experience:
fancy curtains,
small portions
as the main
course and a
bill exceeding
our limit.
Prom itself
was an event
I will always
remember.
There were a
couple after
parties and so
my boyfriend
at the time and
I changed and
headed down
the highway to
pick up some
friends. On the
other side of the
highway, there
was a car in the
right lane and
a car in the left
lane. The car
on the left sped
and swerved.
Then it smashed
into the car on
the right. The
car on the right
flipped over a
couple times
and slid into the
dividers. The
car on the left

after a couple drinks and make it
home fine. He or she would think,
“Oh, I can do that again. This won’t
be any different.” But sometimes,
when someone doesn’t intend to
hurt others, something goes wrong.
Sometimes someone gets hurt or
a life is taken simply because of a
careless choice someone else made
that night.

paper read “Torsell guilty of DUI
killing.” Former 21-year-old Penn
State student Anthony Torsell was
charged with 10 years in prison
after found guilty of vehicular
homicide while driving under the
influence for striking and killing
Richard Smith, 21, and aggravated
assault while driving under the
influence for critically injuring Penn
State student Aaron Stidd, now 21.
Conviction of DUI includes a
mandatory $ 1,000 fine, minimum
90 days imprisonment and an
additional one-year suspension if
you drive on a suspended license.
If you ’re found guilty of homicide,
there’s also a mandatory minimum
three years imprisonment. Even
after the fines and imprisonment,
you have to undergo treatment that
will come out of your own pocket.
But don’t forget about your
insurance. With a DUI conviction,
you’re labeled a “high risk” driver.
Cost can increase up to $5,000
a year or higher and if you are
on a family policy, the insurance
company can cancel the policy or
refuse to renew the policy when it
expires,

articles in violation, the committee
will bring the articles to the
attention of the Senate.
In the removal hearing, which
the Senate leader presides over, all
members of the committee provide
testimony. It is at this point that
Stewart will be allowed to address
the Senate in his defense as well as
provide character witnesses to also
testify in his behalf.
The Senate will then come to a
vote, and will require a two-thirds
majority vote to remove Stewart
from office.
Stewart said, “I’m not worried
about it. I find that these
unconstitutional proceedings are
bogus. These issues that they
thought were a problem could have
been presented to me versus writing
up official papers.”
This is the second impeachment
committee Penn State Harrisburg
has seen in three years. The last
one was a case against President
Michael Edwards in the fall of 2004
His committee deliberated until
late in the spring of 2005 semester,
in which that committee found
his articles to not be in violation
of the constitution and Edwards
successfully ended his term after
the election of President Ariel
O’Malley.
THON: a 35 year Penn
State tradition

THON is a 35-year-old not-for
profit organization which helps
raise money for young cancer
patients whose families are unable
to provide money for proper
treatment. In the past, Penn State
University has helped raised 46
million dollars. With last year’s
total being $5,240,385.17, hopes
and expectations are increased for
'Many Hearts, One Home', the slogan for THON 2007 could be seen
sported on t-shirts during the event.
this year. THON money is spent
on the pediatric cancer center’s
equipment, doctors and wigs for
the kids at Penn State’s pediatric
hospital in Hershey. After year-long
fundraising, a THON dance-off
is held in February and consists
of 48 hours of non-stop dancing,
speeches, music and all around joy!
THON raises money annually
by coming up with new and
exciting ways of obtaining
donations. THON holds dodge
ball tournaments, car washes and
canning events in which cans with
THON labels are placed in offices
and malls for donations. Some

Regardless of what happens,
Stewart already has plans set in
motion for mending the Senate. “I
am setting up a meeting workshop
or a retreat which will promote
teambuilding. I’m working with
Dr. Felicia [Brown-1 lay wood]
to have a workshop that figures
out everyone's leadership styles.
Evidently there are issues that need
to be discussed and we can do that
here. Hopefully the retreat will
mend the Senate.”
Stewart also plans to set up a
comment box outside of the SGA
office where anyone can drop oft
an anonymous comment about
anything they want to express
about the SGA. “It will help me
go on the outside and look into the
problems that 1 may not be able to
see myself.”
While the impeachment committee
reviews the case against Stewart, he
plans on just moving forward. “I’m
not going to change anything about
my presidency. I ha\e an SGA to
run and will continue to do so in a
professional manner. I took an oath
of office, and will stick to it.”
Though he keeps the impeachment
in the back of his mind, Stewart still
continues to smile and run the SGA.
"I knew it |lns presidency) wouldn’t
be smooth. This is just a hump in
the road.”

annual 5K marathon which allows
runners to compete in five different
categories: ages 10 and under, 11

to top male and female w inners
and charges entry fees which go
towards fundraising. A similar

Diamonds fund to sponsor. Chosen
families interact with THON family

go out and by simply contacting
families to notify them of upcoming
