US women's soccer team heads to finals

As the 2007 FIFA Women’s World
Cup heads into the semifinals, Team
USA is ready to take on Brazil.
The No. 1 ranked team in the w
orld kicked off their run for the cup
Tuesday, Sept. 11 with the oldest
team, whose average age is 27 years
and 4 months, in the tournament.
Experience is something Team USA
has. Captain Kristine Lilly is the
only player who has played in all
five Women’s World Cups as well as
starting in every World Cup game the
USA has played.
More than 35,000 fans turned out
to see the opening game of Group
B, the hardest in the cup. USA and
North Korea battled for a 2-2 draw in
slick rainy conditions that persisted
throughout the match. Team USA
outshot North Korea 21-18, but they
couldn’t make shots materialize. USA
goalkeeper Hope Solo couldn’t get a
hold on the ball in the 58th minute
as Kil Son Hui blasted one from the
top of the penalty box. Solo tried to
scramble for the ball but the slick
conditions made it difficult.
“It’s a day in the life of a
goalkeeper,” Solo commented on
North Korea’s first goal, which
slipped through her hands. “The
conditions are slick and it is wet out
there, but it happens.”
The draw is not a loss however. Both
teams receive one point for the draw.
Forward Heather O’Reilly
completed her first game in World
Cup competition with a goal in the
69th minute.
“I think we are walking away with
our heads high,” said O’Reilly. “We
got a point and that is important at
this stage in the tournament. We got
the first game nerves out of the way
and under our belt. We just need wins
from here on out and I think this team
is capable of that.”

The long awaited albums of 50 Cent
and Kanye West finally surfaced
Sept. 11. However, the hype about
who would sell more was a bit
unjust. Kanye blew past 50 with the
selling of over 260,000 more albums
in the first week. I must admit 1
expected their total sales to be a lot
closer. Unfortunately, the number of
sales was not the only letdown.
Let’s start with the Kanye West
album “Graduation.” The album
kicks off with the hot track “Good
Morning.” The beat is hot and the
lyrics are decent. However, the
chorus of “Good Morning,” which
is followed by some 0000-ing and
repeated several times, is not catchy.
1 do not see this being a big single.
But have no fear music lovers; the
album gets better. We move on to
the second track, “Champion.” This
song is fresh! Kanye goes through
the trials and tribulation he’s gone
through to get to where he is. Seeing
Kanye on a personal level of how
his family struggled when he was
young helps to put him back on the
human level, where we can all look
at him with true respect - not simply
respect for his music. This of course,
leads into his next tracks, “Stronger”
and “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” which
if you have not heard by now, you
better get your butt on Ruckus and
formulate your own opinion.
Now let’s fast-forward a little bit
to the middle of the album where I
had to hit the “What on earth were
you thinking” button. “Drunk & Hot
Girls” may quite possibly be one
of the worst songs to ever enter my
ears! The only semi-nice thing I can
even say about it is that the beat is
all right.
Things slow down towards the
end of the album and even get a
little bit awkward when you get to
“The Glory.” The beat simply does
not match up with the song. Sadly,
“Graduation” does not end strong.
Kanye stumbled across the stage
when reaching for his diploma on
this one. Overall I’ll give the album
three and a half stars simply because
his concept is fresh. Some of the
lyrics are pretty tight but the way that
Kanye lends them to the listener’s
ears is weak. It’s almost as if you can
picture Kanye in the studio reading
off of a paper rather than speaking
from his heart.
Next, let’s take a peak at the 50
Cent album “Curtis.” The beginning
of the album is a little difficult to get
into. The first four tracks focus on
50’s career in a gangsta sense. If you
are into that kind of thing, then you
will not be wearing out your skip
button trying to get to “Come & Go”
or “Ayo Technology.” I must say that
“Ayo Technology” is a pretty hot
track. The lyrics are certainly 50’s
style and Justin Timberlake makes an
interesting accent to the track.
50 then lets listeners have a peak at
his softer side in “Follow My Lead.”
This track is pretty mellow for 50
Cent but it still has an impact. Don’t
get too nervous because he spends
the next two tracks reminding you
that he is still a thug at heart.
The album gets a little kinky as we
get to “Amusement Park” and “Peep
Show.” I can honestly say that I will
never think of amusement parks the
same! But 50 redeems himself with
his song “All of Me.” This track is
probably as close to a love song as
we will ever hear from the mouth of
50 Cent.
50 Cent concludes the album
“Curtis” w ith the track “Touch the
Sky,” where he puts in his final
words about taking down anyone
who gets in his way. Though the
music in 50’s album flows more
easily alongside the lyrics, it is
overall a weaker album when
compared to Kanye’s. I give this
■ album three stars simply because I
feel that I have heard it all before. We
all know that 50 is a thug and does
not exactly have the most respect for
women. Maybe he will wow us with
something more original next time.
