SGA UPDATE By JORDAN WISKEMANN Assistant Editor JLWIO62@PSU.EDU Before Spring Break, the SGA met to discuss their upcoming elections. Four out of the seven remaining senators showed up at the meeting. The SGA almost couldn’t hold their March 8 meeting because there were only four senators in attendance. If less than four had shown, the senate wouldn’ have met quorum and couldn’t have held the meeting. Those senators who did attend decided to table voting on the upcoming elections so that every senator could have the opportunity to read over the election packet. The senators at the meeting felt it was fair to allow every senator the opportunity to review the material before voting. Election discussion was pushed back to the first week of April, pushing back the election screening process. Also throwing off the electoral process was the Feb. 29 snow storm. This election, the SGA will especially be looking to fill at least 11 seats on the senate by the senators who resigned throughout this past academic year. Most recently to resign were senators Maruja Rosario and Andrew Scott. Both senators said that time constraints made it difficult to fulfill their roles as senators. Time constraints are the most common reason for senators to resign. President Ariel O’Malley asked senators to tell her the status of their committee meetings at the Feb 22 meeting. Hardly any of the senators had an update. O’Malley pointed out that committee meetings are a responsibility of each senator and that there were only seven weeks left for this year’s SGA. “I suggest you step up your game and get something accomplished,” O’Malley said. Although there are few senators left, there are new additions to the SGA executive board. Lee Samuelson has been sworn in as the Chief of Staff and Alston Boyd as the Treasurer. At the March 8 meeting, Communications Director, Dustin Holler, announced the implementation of a firewall for all staff. Holler said this firewall would provide greater protection from hacking attempts. According to Holler, there are thousands of attempts per month to hack into the faculty computers. Penn State Harrisburg ITS is looking into technology at other universities. Holler also announced that the PSH School of Business computer labs and some faculty computers will now carry Microsoft Office 2007. Any student is welcome to use the new software, but should not save their work in that format, because most computers at the campus don’t have the software. New business the SGA discussed was the upcoming Rock on for the Kids concert. The concert is for kids with cancer and the promotion of THON. Several local bands are scheduled to play. It will be held Saturday April 28 in the Vartan Plaza and will be free to any student with a PSU ID. There will be a five dollar charge for the general public. The SGA almost didn’t make their quorum again at the March 22 meeting when four of seven senators showed up. Every absence was excused this time. Money was allocated to BSU and Lion Ambassadors for various expenses. Senators voted to change the election code from 25 to 100 signatures. Candidates will be screened for expectations of Infamous ball raises money for By MARIAM ELHADRI Staff Reporter MEHII7@PSU.EDU You have seen 5.2 million dollars raised in Penn State’s Thon this past month, in efforts to help children dealing with. Boobies ball first came about January 2006 as an idea from Jim Dougherty, the current Vice President of Lion Ambassadors at the time. He wanted to help with breast cancer awareness by putting a spotlight on the organization Feel Your Boobies and its founder, Leigh Hurst. He finally came up with the idea for a dance, and that was how Boobies Ball was bom. Lion Ambassador Advisor, Laurie Dobrosky, explained that Leigh Hurst started “Feel Your Boobies” foundation and awareness effort after she was diagnosed with breast cancer at a very young age. She said “The Lion Ambassadors feel throwing the ‘Boobies Ball’ is a great way to help promote Leigh’s dream of promoting breast cancer awareness and particularly self exams to young women.” In two months, the Lion Ambassadors whipped the event Fall/Spring Expense Budget: $308,760.00 Other Income: Special Funding: Category Campus Activities Equipment Facilities Program Support Recreation Diversity Just-In-Time Support Services Travel *The Total Expense Budget above includes income after adjustments, and carry forward (pluse or minus) from the previous fiscal year. together and hit a huge success. Since it is the second year for this event, Boobies Ball coordinator, Holly Artz, says Lion Ambassadors plans on keeping an annual event for Penn State Harrisburg. As of now the Boobies Ball is being held at Penn State Harrisburg only. No other Penn State campus has an event like this! Artz said, “It would be cool if it spread throughout the PSU campuses as it grows over the coming years, almost like THON maybe.” 2005-2006 Fall/Spring Student Activity Fee Final Report Harrisburg $490.00 $O.OO 2005-2006 Fall/Spring Expenses $109,055.94 $8,777.95 $O.OO $31,708.79 $13,575.40 $41,099.56 $O.OO $2,300.00 $19,228.39 $225,746.03 She also explained that the Boobies Ball is open to everyone in the entire community, young or old; it’s not just a Penn State thing.
