Harry Potter and the Goblet of
Fire
The Details:
Warner Bros. Pictures
presents a film staring Daniel
Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and
Emma Watson, directed by Mike
Newell, and written by Steven
Kloves (screenplay) and J.K.
Rowling (novel). The film has a
running time of 157 minutes and
is rated PG-13 for sequences of
fantasy violence and frightening
images.
The Low Down:
Harry Potter is mysteriously
entered as an underage
participant into the Tri-Wizard
tournament.
The Dirty:
Ok first thing I want to say
about this film is that, it is
nowhere near being as good
as the book. I think reading
the book before watching the
film ruined the experience

for me and thus may have
tainted my perception of it. It
is understandable that such a
hefty book was not designed to
be turned into a two hour film.
The problem isn't that at all.
The problem is that I feel the
film focused on all of the wrong
things. The film focused more
on the action sequences and
not the story line that would
have made it a million times
better. There was so much
missing or changed from the
book that a good chunk of the
most important part of this story
was lost. There were so many
little things that could have
been brought into the story that
would not have taken long at all
to make the story much better.
The conflict creation would have
only required a few more words
here and there. One example
of this is the puzzle of the mer
people. In the book it said if what
was lost was not found within
an hour, it would be lost forever.
They just happened to leave
off the word forever at the end
of the puzzle. Leaving that out
eliminated the conflict between
Harry and his conscience. Other

things that were left completely
out may not seem so important
now, but it ruins the future films.
Overall the screenplay could
have been a lot stronger.
When it comes down to the
actual film-making, the film
feels very choppy. They try to
fit so much in, but it just doesn't
work. It feels as though they
accidentally shot a five hour
movie and tried to clip it back
to two and a half hours. The
film does have the wonderful
quality of taking you out of
the real world and it must
be commended on this. The
beautiful world put before you
makes the trip worth it. You will
forget you are in the theater
every now and again, but do
keep in mind that you will be
abruptly broken from your
fantasy by the choppiness.
I recommend seeing it if you

are a fan of the series. If you
read the books you may be
disappointed but it is nice to see
some of the things from the book
come to life on the big screen. If
you aren't a fan of the series or
the books I would wait for it to
come out on video or cable.
I give it 3 Outbreaks out of 5
