New editor looks to take Cap Times above and beyond Ah yes. Spring couldn't have come at a better time. After many inch es of snowfall, the bright sun and green grass seem to make everything better, even studying for finals. The fresh smell of spring reminds me that there is light at the end of the semester's tunnel. But my summer will have one main focus: improving the Capital Times. If you were to say that I have no. life, you wouldn't be far off. Journalism is my life and I want it to be part of my life for a long time. And I'm hoping that some of you will make it parts of yours as well. I think Stacy did a wonderful job with the Cap Times this year. Her dedication will be sorely missed and I would like to wish her the best of luck. I've been involved with student newspapers for a year and a half and she's as dedicated as any I've seen. As editor, I plan to build upon the foundation that Stacy put into place this year. My first order of business is to recruit as many contribu tors as possible. I would like to see a lot of people making small contri butions to the newspaper rather than a few people doing all the work. It'll be more fun for everybody this way. Even if you have never written news articles or simply hate to write, there are many things students can do to help out. Obviously writ ing articles is one of them, but we also need photographers, copy editors (similar to proofreaders), layout and graphic design editors, business and advertising people, and distributors. I heavily recommend that communications majors get involved at the Cap Times. Though it's never bad to have a high GPA, employers pay more attention to people who have hands-on experience. This is exactly what the Cap Times has to offer. You will have clips to show employers, you'll learn to use the software, and you'll have a good time doing it. Even if you're not a communications major, the Cap Times has a lot to offer. Employers will respect the fact that you participated in extra curricular activities regardless of the field. It may just give you the edge you need to score that high-paying job you always dreamed of having. Anyone interested in participating next year can call us at 948- 6440 or e-mail us at captimes@psu.edu. Regarding the content of the paper, I would like to see more depth in our coverage of this campus. Some ideas include covering intra mural sports, an article about student clubs in each issue, comprehensive SGA coverage, an events page, humor articles, student-drawn cartoons, more pictures, and as many feature articles as possible. All of these things will be tough to include on an issue-to-issue basis, but I am confident we can address all of them over the course of next year. I've done this before at HACC, so I am confident I can make this newspaper a better, more enjoyable publication, not that it isn't enjoyable already. The key will be thorough coverage and we will need a lot of peo ple to do it. One last thing I would like to stress is letters to the editor. We want to hear from the student body as much as possible. If you think the Cap Times is great, send us an email. If you think it sucks, write us a let ter and let us have it. Tell us where , we went wrong. Also, if there's an event you want to see covered, give us a call and let us know. We try to be everywhere at once, but it's tough to keep track of everything some times since most of us are taking a full load of credits. In closing, I would like to thank the readers for taking the time to pick up the Cap Times when there are three other free papers to choose from. It shows that you are genuinely interested in what goes on at this campus.
