COMMENTS FROM THE ECIITOR
Being as this is the last Editor's Comments I will get to pen,
there are some issues I would like to address. The first being the cur
rent situations not only at Penn State Harrisburg but also in the PSU
system as a whole. You all know about the tuition increase, I am sure
most of you have felt that swift kick in the ass when your semester
bills came this year. Well, get ready for another increase in the coming
semesters. Some students have decided to take matters into their own
hands and speak up against the increase. On April 7, members of the
SGA and CCSG (Council of Commonwealth Student Governments)
attended the Rally in the Rotunda (issue 15 vol. 43 of The Capital
Times). The turnout was rather low due to weather conditions.
However, the sparse attendance was also due to lack of publicity, a
problem PSH clubs and offices constantly face. Students who read the article in the last issue of
the Capital Times decided to take matters into their own
hands and are planning their own rally in hopes to gain more
support. Be sure to look for flyers and announcements in the
coming weeks.
Something else many students may be familiar with
is the heavily stressed Internet piracy laws that have been
instituted by PSU. Mass e-mails have been sent out and viola
tion warnings appear every time you log into a PSH comput
er. Do not ignore these warnings. More than a hundred Penn
State students from various campuses (including University
Park) have been arrested and fined for violating these laws
and downloading music, movies, etc. When it comes down to
it, it is cheaper to just buy the CD or DVD than risk getting arrested, kicked out of school, or
fined hundreds of dollars or more.
Now on to the sentimental part of my final comments.
It saddens me to say that my job here is done. My stint as Editor in Chief of The Capital
Times has come to an end. I must say that it has been a sometimes bumpy journey, especially at
first, but hey, I was and still am learning. I have heard more compliments recently and it makes
me feel'that my time and effort was not in vain. One student approached me at a party and told
me that the paper has greatly improved since last year and that he still has the first issue from fall
(you know, the one with the beer bottles). You have no idea what little things like that can do to
make you forget all of the negative comments and criticism that are thrown at you in a position
such as this.
Now it is Pete's turn. Slowly but surely I have been letting Pete take control of the oper
ation so he can keep on improving the paper. The Capital Times is always a work in progress and
it has taken many fine editors and staff members to get it to where it is now. I have complete
faith that Pete will carry on the tradition of excellence that the Captimes has come to expect from
itself. We put more pressure on ourselves than the readers ever could.
I know that being a member of The Capital Times has been an almost life-altering expe
rience. I have learned many skills that I hope prove useful after I graduate in May. Throughout
this experience I have learned to look at things very differently and have learned to deal with
many different situations. I have been faced with ridicule and praise, complications and long
nights. I have learned that sleep is overrated and good friends are like life support.
As glad as I am to have my degree and to officially become a member of "the real
world", I will miss all of you here at Penn State Harrisburg. I wish you all the best of luck. Now I
am going to leave you with one last somewhat profound thought: Lewis Carroll once wrote. "
At least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed sev
eral times since then." I have changed in many ways just by being a part of the Penn State com
munity. I am no longer the scared, naive, relatively antisocial, lost little girl I was 4 years ago. I
have become my own person and a student leader here at PSH. I have all of those who have sup
ported and my staff and me along the way to thank. --- Stacy D.
