The first issue involves the fact that too many stu dents are forced to stay an extra semester than they should. Apparently they schedule classes for a semester under the guidance of their advisor, both the advisor and the student thinking that the classes will count towards the student's degree requirements. When the student goes to schedule classes for the following semester, they find out that they took classes they didn't need to take. This is a major problem for students. It costs them both time and money. However, it benefits the university because they get an extra semester's worth of tuition from the student. This could be why so many students have this problem and why it keeps happening over and over again There needs to be better communi cation between students, advisors, and those who set the degree requirements. I'm not blaming the advisors because I know many of them have a lot of students to advise. I think that maybe the system, in general, needs to be tweaked so that this can stop. The Capital Times is going to feature an article that will address this issue. But since it looks like a complex topic, it could take a month or two. Secondly, I hear a lot of students who live on campus tell me that there isn't a lot to do. This will be helped when the Olmsted Building's first floor, East Wing finally opens up, but I think there is more to the problem. There seems to be a huge void on campus because we don't have any inter-collegiate 411 athletics. From 1973-1993, PSH had basketball, baseball, volleyball, tennis, soccer, and cross-country teams that competed against other colleges like Shippensburg and Dickinson. They were all cut in 1993 because of a budget defecit. But I think that the time has come to bring intercollegiate sports back to Penn State Harrisburg. We now have five four-year majors about to be integrated into our degree programs, and our student population pushes 3,000. I think bringing competitive sports back would pump some life into our student population. Look for an article about this on in the April 14th issue. Lastly, I would like to congratulate all those on campus who participated in THON.They don't need me to tell them this, but you guys did a great thing. We wrongly assumed that Jo Ann Coleman had influ ence over whether or not the Lion Athbassadors could get an office. In fact, Coleman is not in charge of the assignment of club space in the Olmsted building. Janet Widoff is the person responsible for this job. Her comments can be seen on page 5.
