Snow Storm Blues
Central PA’s snow season has started
and with it come delays and cancellations, or
lack thereof. Thursday, December sth started
with a snow storm and by 7:00 AM we had 3
inches of snow. This is pretty impressive for
only starting about 3 hours before. Then I
turned on the TV to see if the campus had any
delays or cancellations. Well to my surprise,
only afternoon class had been canceled. The
campus was to
close at 12:00 PM.
What I was
trying to figure out
is: How can some-
one make the deci-
sion to have morn-
ing classes on a day
like that? I decided
to risk it and attend
my morning classes
When I arrived on
campus, it seemed as though only the minimal
amount of snow removal had been done. The
Olmsted parking lot had approximately 12
spaces in each aisle plowed. I was amazed at
what I saw because most of the student body
parks in Olmsted! After I was able to find a
parking spot, I ventured toward the Olmsted
Building and again I was taken by surprise: the
sidewalks were not even cleaned off and the
steps were not cleared either. How can you

justify opening a campus that is not only
unsafe itself but not safe to get to? Come on!
If you cannot have the campus up to par or
within reason of no one being injured, then
you are accepting the possibility of being held
liable when someone falls.
Maybe they learned something from
their neglectful decision on that day. The
school decided to cancel classes on
Wednesday the 11th
due to an ice storm.
I am not sure that
they have. They
a snow storm. The common caring for ice is
cinders and salt. Not to hard to handle. Yet
the snow must be plowed then cinders and salt
is to be applied. I guess they were in disbelief
of the local/national meteorologists (1 out of
every 4 is a Penn State Grad) that said the ice
would not last long into the day because tem
peratures were going to rise, and the roadways
would just be wet.
