Tenure travesty:
Students-ultimate victims
At the close of last semester, I began to think about how I
would handle my newly appointed position as Editor-in-Chief
of The Capital Times. There were many questions and
concerns that plagued my head. However, confident in my
abilities as both a writer and team player, I accepted the
challenge eagerly, knowing that the paper's truly experienced
and helpful advisor, Dr. Parisi, would be standing by for
guidance, and support.
Three short months later, my optimism collided with an
unexpected and highly disappointing hurdle-Dr. Peter Parisi
had resigned as Assistant Professor of Humanities and
Communications, thereby leaving the Capital Times, and the
Communications Department without a full-time journalism
professor.
The Capital Times staff, without question, is disappointed
and hurt by the decision of Provost Ruth Leventhal, and
Associate Provost Ernest Dishner to deny Dr. Peter Parisi
tenure.
Dr. Parisi not only provided students with the knowledge of
what it takes to be a journalist, he also provided sound,
objective advice to reporters of The Capital Times. His absence
is a void that can not easily be filled.
The Capital Times is more than just a voice for Penn State
Harrisburg students, it is also a practical medium for
communication majors to receive experience in the field of
journalism. Without a mentor to provide guidance and
support these attributes will fall to the way-side.
Because there is no immediate, full-time replacement for Dr.
Parisi, we , as communication students, and clients of the
Penn State system, are being denied the education we
deserve.
There are two, count them, two full-time communication
faculty members to instruct a growing population of
communication students. It doesn't take a finance major to
realize that there is a huge deficit in the Humanities Division.
The communications program is on the verge of educational
bankruptcy.
If this kind of educational neglegence is being tolerated in
the Humanities Division, students must realize that it could
very well plague every academic division at Penn State
Harrisburg.
As students, you deserve the best full-time faculty members
your money can buy; The Capital Times can't do much to
provide that. However, with the memory of Dr. Parisi's
journalistic wisdom echoing in our ears, The Capital Times will
do its best to provide you with honest, objective journalism,
despite our lost mentor.
