The 1992-93 Alumni Mentor Program is designed to bring students together with successful alumni in their individual fields, giving them an opportunity to network and make potential job contacts with professionals. "The program turned out better than BSU officers elected Angie West Capital Times Staff The Black Student Union (BSU) began their 1992-93 election on Thursday, Sept. 3, in the Black Cultural Arts Center (BCAC), but held it open until Friday, Sept. 4, so that all the members would have a chance to vote. The new officers are Bill Stoner, president; Mike Weldon, vice-president; Chris Gibbs, treasurer; Leroy Bunyan, corresponding secretary; and Otto Banks, secretary. President-elect Stoner said, "The BSU has a pretty ambitious semester ahead." Stoner isn't wasting any time getting his agenda started. "This is a learning experience for our office," Lawrence said. "We are already setting goals for next year." According to Lawrence, 142 alums showed interest in the program, while approximately 20 students applied. Although the program was initially geared for juniors, Lawrence commented that senior students have dominated the applications. Mentor and student matches were made meeting on Monday, Sept. 10, Stoner shared his plans to educate the Penn State Harrisburg community about African- American culture during Black History Month, which will be celebrated in February 1993. Last semester the organization was shaken by the disappearance of two statues from the BCAC. In spite of this setback, the members of the organization philosophize that they may have lost their statues, but their pride and strength remain intact. Presently, Donald Holtzman, student activities coordinator, is working with the BSU to replace the missing statues. 843-0911 742 S. George St. York with consideration to professional desires and outside interests. Students will be linked with their partners at a "Meet Your Mentor" luncheon at the beginning of the semester. After the luncheon, participants will be urged to meet with their mentor at least twice during the semester. This experience may take the form of a meeting, lunch or tour. Students must also maintain contact by letter or telephone a minimum of three times throughout the semester. Budget cuts offer new opportunities Stacey Simmers Capital Times Staff With the new budget cuts chasing after every Penn State wallet, individual programs are trying to f - md new sources of income to supplement any money that's might not be taken away. Krishna Dhir, director of the school of business administration, hopes that he can save his program by getting grants from local industries. "I see this as an opporunity to get my students 'involved in local businesses," Dhir said.
