PSH hosts 20th Annual model U.N. Timothy Brown Capital Times Staff A resolution recently passed, by the United Nations will call for member nations to preserve and halt destruction of the world's rain forests. Unfortunately, the world won't benefit from the act. It was part of the 20th Annual Model United Nations conference, held at Penn State Harrisburg, Feb. 20-22. The conference, sponsored by the International Affairs Association, was a simulation of the actual United Nations, with 400 students from 30 central Pennsylvania high schools participating. According to Dr. Clem Gilpin, assistant professor of community systems and Afro-American studies, and co-director of the conference, "A group of three students represents a country, and will spend 2 1/2 days debating the issues as the actual country would at the UN." Gilpin said, "We hope the students will research their areas in depth to learn more about global issues that they might not be familiar with.” Members of the lAA served as planners and directors of the conference. Bill Stoner, a graduate student and lAA member who served as a UN committee chairman said, "They are familiar with the actual positions of their representative countries. They debate as though they are really from the country.
