Keynote Speaker Irving Hand, director of the Institute of State and Regional
Affairs and a professor of state and regional planning at Penn State
Harrisburg, addresses the audience at fall commencement, held at Founder's
Hall in Hershey on Jan. 11. Hand advised the graduates about the need to
eliminate racism and learn tolerance, in order to better deal with a diversified
world.

Forrey reminded the audience of the
large number of Penn State graduates.
"One in every one thousand Americans
is a Penn State alumnus," he said. "We
have graduates who are award-winning
writers, successful doctors and leaders of
Fortune 500 companies, so you're in good
company."
MLK program highlight of
PSH Black History Month

Students, staff and members of the
community are invited to attend various
events in celebration of Black History
Month, from Jan. 23 to Feb. 27.
The program includes seminars, music,
theater productions, art exhibits, cultural
food and discussions based on black
heritage, and is sponsored by the Black
Student Union and student affairs.
The agenda was designed to educate the
public of the many contributions made by
African Americans.
Events scheduled include a program
entitled "Our Memories of Martin," on
Jan. 23 in the Capital Union Building.
The show will feature choirs, faculty, staff
members and students.
Two seminars will be given; one
focusing on the issue of the African
American male crisis will be held Feb. 1.
The seminar will deal specifically with
the issues of education and the Black male,
The Black athlete, media and the Black
male, and parenting the Black male child.
A second seminar dealing with African
American health issues will be held on
Feb. 10 in the Gallery Lounge.
Open Stage Theater of Harrisburg will
give a production of "Master Harold and
the Boys" Feb. 2 at the Rose Lehrman Art
Center at the Harrisburg Area Community
College. A bus to the play will depart
from the Olmsted Building.
Musical presentations throughout the
month will feature Gospelrama, baritone
Edward Pierson, Jr. and jazz musicians
Stevenson Twins. An art exhibit by Allen
Moore will also be displayed in the
Gallery Lounge Feb. 3-28.
"Paul, We Hardly Knew Ye: Robeson
Remembered," is a musical narrative on
Paul Robeson's accomplishments.
Robeson, an athlete, activist, lawyer,
singer and actor, is also one of New
Jersey's "Citizens of the World."
The performance includes opera,
spirituals, show tunes and art songs
including "Let My People Go" and "Of

Edward Pierson, Jr.
Pierson, a voice professor at Montclair
State College, performed with the New
York City Opera for 14 years.
The New Jersey resident has an
impressive list of accomplishments.
Pierson has performed in productions such
as "Don Carlo," "Showboat," "Tosca" and
"Porgy and Bess," with such well-known
orchestras as the Chicago Symphony,
Cleveland Orchestra, Cincinnati Pops and
the Los Angeles Symphony.
An "Intergenerational Round Table"
will be held Feb. 10 in the Gallery
Lounge. A second discussion session
called the "Think Tank Symposium: The
Role of the African-American in the
Context of Multi-Culturalism" will be
held Feb. 24 in the Black Cultural Arts
Center.
The Black History Month Celebration
ends with a "Soul Food Sampler" on Feb.
27 in the Gallery Lounge.
