Latin music in Gallery Lounge The Latin jazz quintet "Salsamba" will be performing in the Gallery Lounge on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 12:05 p.m. The group's music blends the traditions of American jazz with the spicy rhythms of Cuba, Brazil and the Caribbean to create music with originality. Based in Pittsburgh, Salsamba has performed at clubs, festivals and colleges throughout the United States. They've also opened for Latin jazz king Tito Puente, guitarists John Scofield and Stanley Jordan, as well as flutist Dave Vallentin. And in 1989 Salsamba was featured in a broadcast of National Public' Radio's "American Jazz Radio Festival Program." Salsamba released their debut album New director wants changes Stacey Simmers Capital Times Stuff Gautam Ray, the newly appointed director of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology at Penn State Harrisburg, has an impressive list of credentials, according to his resume. After teaching at schools like Florida International University and University of Wisconsin Medical School, why Penn State Harrisburg? "I'm a Penn State graduate," Ray said. "I like it here. That was a factor in my coming here," he added. "Penn State Harrisburg has a strong engineering program - one of the best in the nation," Ray said. Ray said he wants to expand the already strong graduate programs and he wants to add two new degree programs. ‘When a new guy comes in, he has to make some changes," Ray chuckled. In the developmental stages are a master's degree in computer science, and a bachelor's degree in computer technology, Ray announced. "Since I have been involved in industry and community, I feel that I can do it,” Ray said, about the new programs. Ray said he is not working alone. Fortunately, 1 have an excellent staff," Ray said. "I believe that we actually educate the students - we don't train them. If we train them, they have to be trained every time technology changes. If they're educated well, they're capable of teaching themselves. This is valuable at any time," Ray added. New technologies are always changing, Ray said, adding that engineers have to understand them. "We can't simply sit quietly," Ray said. According to Ray, he prefers teaching to working as an engineer. As a professor, he can have the best of both worlds, Ray said. Much of their music is written and arranged by their guitarist and leader Eric Susoeff. Also appearing in the Gallery Lounge, on Wendesday, Oct. 9, Constance Garcia-Barrio will present her "Traditional Black Stones from Spanish America" from noon to 1 p.m. Garcia-Barrio, an assistant professor of Spanish at West Chester University, will tell stories from several Black Hispanic cultures and discuss the origin of these popular tales. She says the stories are based on the oral tradition enslaved Africans brought to America which has enriched many countries. Gautam Ray but I also get to do quality research.
