New workshops
target commuters
Sharon Barris
Capital Times Staff
Commuter students often miss many
of the special workshops and programs
that are organized at Penn State
Harrisburg because jobs and family
commitments call the students home
right after class.
With time in mind, Karen Bowser,
Rie Gentzler and Janet Widoff,
coordinator of student activities,
designed the Commuter Express, which
consists of several thirty minute
workshops. These workshops will give
quick, but precise tips for writing skills,
time management and studying. The
speakers hope that these shorter than
average workshops will fit in commuter
students' schedules as well as resident
students' schedules.

Karen Bowser's workshop, "Write
On!" will concentrate on many of the
weaknesses that are found in the
students' Writing Skills Assessments.
Students will also be given the
opportunity to request other skills
improvement workshops through a
student needs survey that will be
distributed during the workshops. These
surveys will help to determine the
content of future workshops that have
been planned.
Bowser's "Write On!" will be held at
the Commuter Lounge, on September
25 and 26 from 12:20-12:50 p.m. and
September 24 or 25 from 5:15-5:45
p.m. Any student who wishes to
improve their writing skills or simply
learn more efficient methods of writing
is encouraged to attend.
will be the Ensemble’s president this
year.
Tracy Bogans, former pianist and
choir member said, "The club is well
organized and practices to perfection."
Last February for Black History
month, CGE sponsored a visit from
Ethel Caffie-Austin, who delighted the
audience with stories and music about
the south and slavery.
This organization's purpose is to give
spiritual encouragement and inspiration
to its members. Their membship is not
restricted and all faculty, staff and
students are welcome.
Capital Gospel Ensemble will start
practices when their 1991 budget is
approved by SGA. Anyone interested in
membership contact Paula Johnson at
948-9077.
