Lady spikers dig into new season Mike Givler Capital Times Staff The Penn State Harrisburg women's volleyball team is ready to serve up another season, but this team will have to play in the shadow of last year's team which has been called the best ever. Coach David Hume said the 1990 Lions record of 5-7 was the best in school history, but it was a veteran team unlike this year's team. "We lost all but two players from last year's team, and rive of them were starters,'' said Hume. Hume added that team captain Cindy Carlson was the only returning starter and that Barbara Streeter is also back from last year's squad. Hume said this year is one of rebuilding and, though the team has a lot of potential, they also have a lot to learn in a short amount of time. Hume also said that some of the teams they play have women who have up to eight years of high school and college experience, which makes it tough for a two-year institution to compete. He added that four-year Big ten, from page 14 conference game can give a poor team a little more of a boost because they have something to play for-a conference championship. Whereas, if the same poor team is an independent and loses its first couple games, their season is all but over. Sure, it is still nice to knock off a good team, but there is more satisfaction if you beat a good team and bump them out of the conference championship race. I commend the Lions for finally joining a conference and I like the new Big Ten logo (can you rind the hidden 11?). I hope one day every team will be a part of a conference and can experience the excitement generated by an ongoing, annual rivalry. I realize that the Penn State-Pitt rivalry is falling victim to scheduling limitations; however, Penn State is sure to develop heated rivalries with their new conference foes. I believe that Ohio State will fill the void created by the elimination of the Pitt series, because OSU, like Penn State, has a rich football tradition, is a large institution, and is geographically the closest Big Ten school. "We have a team of girls who are dedicated and willing to learn," Hume said. "The enthusiasm is great" Hume added that this team also has the most height he has seen in his six year coaching stint at the college. He concluded by saying that this will be a good learning year and that next year he expects to contend for the Keystone Athletic Championship. September 17: Misericordia def. Penn State Harrisburg 15-4,15-3,15-9. The Lions opened their 1991 campaign against a very talented Misericordia team in front of the largest crowd Coach Hume has ever seen at the college. The Lady Lions' inexperience showed, but the senior leadership of Carlson was a bright spot Stacey Simmers and Rachel Acri sparked the offense with some good serves and the setting of Lori Craig and Simmers gave the Lions most of their points. Hume said the team displayed good overall hustle and they kept a good attitude despite being out matched.
