12 CAPITAL TIMES, February 15,1991 Female PSH sports find success Mike Givler Capital Times Sports The 1990-1991 athletic season at Penn State Harrisburg may not only go down as one of the best seasons in the history of the college, but it may also mark the beginning of the women's program. Athletic Director Duane Crider said this season has been the best varsity sport season since he took his position four years ago. The soccer team just missed the chance to go to the district playoffs and the basketball team is also enjoying one of its best seasons ever. Crider added that it is not just the amount of wins that has made this season a memorable one. "All of the sports have received the much needed interest from students. This wasn't the case in the past," Crider said. Crider said the best example of this was last year’s baseball team which suited ten players to many of its games. This year the fall roster has expanded to twenty-two players. Softball will be offered this spring on a club basis due to the renewed interest shown. Recreation Specialist Denise Keary can be thanked for the sudden surge in the women's program this year. Keary, also the coach of the softball team, is hoping for an eight game schedule which will feature games against the Hershey Women's League along with games versus other Commonwealth Campuses. The slow pitch team is hoping to go to a varsity fast-pitch schedule next-year. Nittany Lions add Ga. Tech to slacked schedule UNIVERSITY PARK-The look of Penn State’s football schedule has changed dramatically in recent weeks with the addition of unbeaten Georgia Tech, the national champion in the United Press International coaches poll, and the move of the Pittsburgh game from November 23 to Thanksgiving Day. The modifications at the front and back of the 1991 card mean the Nittany Lions will open the season on August 28 and wind it up on November 28 at Pitt Stadium. The Penn State-Georgia Tech game was arranged by organizers of the Kickoff Classic as the ninth renewal of the showcase that traditionally kicks off the college football season. It will be played on Wednesday, August 28, at Giants Stadium in the New Jersey Meadowlands. Kickoff is set for approximately 8 p.m. The contest will be televised nationally by Raycom Sports and broadcast coast-to-coast by Mutual Radio. The course, being taught Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., teaches proper technique, warming-up and how not to overdue it Keary also teaches one of the three aerobics courses offered by the campus. She teaches one of the two low-impact classes while Health Education Graduate Assistant Debbie Morris teaches the other and Laura Stickley teaches the lone high-impact course. "The low-impact courses accent the lateral movements and there is not as much stress on the back and joints," Keary said. Georgia Tech had and outstanding 1990 season and presents a formidable challenge as an opening opponent next year." This will be the first game between the Lions and Yellow Jackets since 1966, Patemo's first year as head coach. Under the late Bobby Dodd, Tech blanked Penn State, 21-0, at Grant Field.
