    NHL Playoff Race

Capital Times Sports
The Philadelphia Flyers and
Pittsburgh Penguins continue to fight
for their playoff lives in the tight Patrick
Division race, as five teams struggle for
three playoff spots in the last two weeks
of the season.
Both the Flyers and Pens have been
hampered by injuries all season.
Flyer all-star goalie, Ron Hextall,
has missed most of the season as well as
defenseman Mark Howe and high-scoring
forward Tim Kerr.
The Penguins lost the league's best
center and top scorer, Mario Lemieux,
for the remainder of the season in early
February. Ace goaltender, Tom
Barrasso, has missed a good portion of
the season as well as solid young
defenseman Zarley 7alapski.
Even with Lemieux out, the
Penguins still have more scoring punch
than the Flyers with players like veteran
defenseman Paul Coffey and young
scorers like John Cullen and Mark
Recchi.
Locally the Hershey Bears, an
American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate
of the Flyers, are virtually out of the
playoff picture. The Bears have been
hurt by inconsistent play and numerous
players called up by the Flyers.
Back to the National Hockey League
(NHL), the New York Rangers outclass
the rest of the Patrick Division. Key
acquisitions like Bernie Nicholls and

Mike Gartner give the Rangers much
needed scoring punch to go with young
stars like Brian Leetch and Darren
Turchote.
With a tough goalie combination of
John Vanbiesbrouck and Mike Richter,
the Rangers are geared to make a strong
run at the Stanley Cup that they have
not won in over 40 years.
The class of the NHL however is
clearly the Boston Bruins, Calgary
Flames, and Gretzky-less Edmonton
Oilers. Expect to see two of these teams
in the finals, because it is tough to pull
upsets in a seven game series.
Editors Note: The New York
Rangers' hopes for the Stanley Cup
recently dwindled when Brian Leetch
broke his ankle. Leetch is expected to
miss the remainder of the season. Also,
the Hershey Bears have been officially
eliminated from the AHL playoffs.

basketball is now being shown at
schools like N.C. State and Maryland.
These schools are taking college
athletics to places they have never been
or should never be... Congratulations to
Sally Bingaman on her recent
engagement to Doug Wagner. Good
Luck to both-of you...
