Model U.N. staff on By John Yagecie The fruits of countless hours of hard work and preparation and the generosity of the Penn State Harrisburg community were harvested on Feb. 16 through the 18 at the Penn State Harrisburg high school Model United Nations. This year's conference was especially successful because of the dedicated members of the International Affairs Association. Dr. Clem Gilpin, assistant professor of community systems and afro- American studies, commended the Model U.N. team for their ability and pusevevance. "We were very fortunate to have a core group of highly dedicated and motivated Capital students to run the conference," Gilpin said, "this year they were exceptionally well prepared." Senior public policy major and president of the lAA Lori Howe was very pleased with the outcome of the Model U.N., but releived to have a respite fmm the tension. "There is a great deal of time and energy put into the whole program," Howe said. "The conference was a success due partly to all the support we received from the campus community," said Howe. This support came primarily in the form of housing provided by PSU- Harrisburg students for the 450 visiting high school delegates. "That is crucial," said Gilpin. "Many of the schools that attended probably could not have come to the conference if our students hadn't opened up their homes," stated Gilpin. The result of all this effort was a conference that opened the minds of high school students to the world around them. "The students were introduced to countries that they generally would not study in high school," Gilpin said. "They definitely learned something," said senior public policy major Brien Kalnoski. "It was a an educational experience for both the kids and the staff involved," Kalnoski said. "It was a great oppurtunity to learn about international affairs and develop communication skills," Miller said. "We had to express ourselves as the countries we were representing," said Miller. "I got the chance to meet many people, not only as high school students but as representatives of different nations; it was very worthwhile," Miller said. One complaint voiced by Dr. Gilpin and the lAA members was the unusual lack of media coverage this year, despite the undeniable success of the 89 Model U.N.
