Scholarship announced for
Washington, D.C. -- The seventh
annual International Student
Scholarship Competition -- a
nationwide essay competition for
international students studying in the
United States -- is now underway, said
Tom St. Denis, vice president of
International Underwriters/Brokers, Inc.,
sponsor of the competition.
First prize is $1,500 to be used for
academic or professional advancement.
International Underwriters/Brokers,
Inc., also will award $350 to the
International Student Office of the first
place winner.

International students interested in
entering must submit an essay of no
more than 1,500 words on the topic:
"Important cross-cultural clues are
often found in humor. Compare humor
in your country with humor as you find
it in America. Include examples of
humorous situations resulting from
cross-cultural misunderstandings, either
in the U.S. or on your first visit back to
your home country."
Additional scholarships will be
awarded to a second-place winner
($1,000); a third-place winner ($500) and
five honorable mention recipients ($lOO

Musician Warren Newman played
infectious foot-tapping melodies to a
small but very enthusiastic audience in
the Gallery Lounge on Nov. 9.
The performance was part of the Penn
State Harrisburg cultural series, Live in
the Gallery Lounge.
Newman, who performed on the
guitar and mandolin, played a variety of
music that ranged from jazz and
bluegrass tunes to melodies from the
British Isles.

He opened the performance with a
medley of mandolin tunes that combined
British, Irish and American melodies.
"Many of the tunes may sound the
same," Newman said, "but there are
subtle rhythm and melodic differences
among American, Irish and Scottish
tunes."
The musician has formed his own
group which is called "High Strung."
The group is based in Harrisburg and
frequently plays at the Bottling Works in
Mt. Joy as well as other local clubs and
taverns.
The competition is open to all full
time foreign students enrolled in a
prescribed degree or certificate-granting
program at an accredited high school,
junior college, college or university
within the United States.
Also eligible are students enrolled in
an English training program who plan to
pursue higher education in the United
States.

Warren Newman performs in
Gallery Lounge

Currently, the group has relmsed two
recordings. Their first record, "High
Strung," and a more recent release called
"Second Wind."
Midway through his noon time
performance, Newman was joined by
Henry Koretzky, known to. many Penn
State Harrisburg faculty and students as
the clerk at the periodical desk in the
Heindel Library.
He came out of the audience and
joined Newman in the performance.
The duo, which consisted of Newman
on mandolin and Koretzky on guitar,
played a variety of songs that included
"Whiskey Before Breakfast" and a
bluegrass tune entitled "Salt Creek."
Koretzky said that he had played with
Newman and "High Strung" before, but
that at the present time, he is a member
of a group called "All Strung Out."
Students who missed the performance
in the Gallery Lounge, can see and hear
Newman and "High Strung" perform a
bluegrass vesper service on Nov. 20 at
the Covenant Presbyterian Church on
sth and Peffer streets in Harrisburg.
