e 10, February 24, 1988 Capital Times Around Capital College by Judy L. Hricak Ouestion: What is your opinion of the 1988 Presidential Candidates? ,rosette Kloker - I think the whole campaign has turned into a circus. I can't keep track of the candidates and the ones I do know, I don't know their views on issues. For example, the only candidate I really know is Gary Hart, and the only thing I know about him is he is an adulterer. We should be more concerned with his political views, instead of who he sleeps with. Deann Hess -We don't know what they stand for. How are we supposed to vote for them? Leo Zuvich - There is entirely too much "muscling" going on. I think George Bush will win the Republican nomination by a hair over Dole. Pat Gaffey - I could do the job. All the candidates get criticized by someone for anything they do. Some people like what they do and some don't. I can handle people yelling at me, I get that now. Besides, I'd make a lot more as president than I make now at Sears. I'd get to live in a big white house, I wouldn't have to clean it, and it would be a good time. I'm also good in front of the camera. Dave Bowers - I could really give a s - They are all full of hot air. There isn't a leader among them R. e Tammy Jordan - I don't think much of them. Too many of the issues are lost amidst the battles between candidates. The candidates need to focus on the issues rather than personal attacks. Mike Dahm - I don't follow them. I'm not interested in these matters at all - It's a waste of money, and television time t! ~ 1. - I wouldn't vote for any of them MI!!= - They are all full of hot air Cheri Krause College students hold the future of America in the palms of their However, not one student polled in this survey is happy with the candidates. Where does that leave the future? If someone isn't happy with a president, they're likely to take an apathetic position against his policies. There's already an over-abundance of apathy on this campus. If that attitude of apathy spread across America, the consequences would be mind boggling. As students, and Americans, we must realize that our future is too important to take lying down. If, indeed, we are all so unhappy with the candidates, then something should be done. However, he also said that publishers are now doing net pricing. Publishers sell a book for a certain price and let the bookstore decide its retail price. Williams said it would not be feasible to lower the mark-up to 10 percent. "We would be operating at a loss," she said. Figures for the bookstore are not available to back this statement, but Williams did say that the bookstore is a non-profit organization. One way for students to save money is to buy used books, said Merchandise Supervisor at University Park. Liz Wilson. If a book is going to be used again in a Capital College course, the bookstore will buy it back at one-half the new price. The bookstore will then add 25 percent and the book is back on the shelf. If the price of a new book is $2O, the bookstore will buy it back used for $lO, and resell it for $l5. Williams said that the mark-up on a resale of a used book is necessary because there is always the possiblity of the book not being sold. "It costs money to sort and price them before they either go back on the shelf or back to the United Parcel Service Part-time Employment Opportunities Available $B.OO per hour and up All Shifts Available Strenuous and challenging work available. Wilson said that the prices at Penn State are comparable, if not lower, to prices at other universities. When comparing prices at Capital College with those of our neighboring college, HA.7C, there is a little discrepancy. "The bookstore on campus is ,011. supportive and is owned by the um versity," said Robert Hamill, Ina lager of personnel and business service. According to Hamill, the bookstore does not receive any funds from the university. Money the bookstore makes pays employees' salaries and other expenses. "Excess money from the bookstore is put into a general scholarship endowment fund for the university," Williams said. But where did the students purchase books before this bookstore was built three years ago? According to Hamill, students were able to purchase books in the Olmsted building. Hamill also said that the money to build this new bookstore did not come from the university; it came from the bookstore systems fund. This is a university-wide reserve fund which is supported through profits from the entire Penn State bookstore system.
