EvAyter s Photos by Kyle Weaver Local Pastor Extends Invitation to Students By Jan Travers "There needs to be a Christian atmosphere on campus because many ethical issues come up where religious views are needed," according to a local Lutheran minister. Pastor Robert Schmitt, new minister at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Middletown, is hoping to create a low-keyed contact campus ministry at Penn State Harrisburg. "I want to give students a chance to work religious life out beyond the campus as well as on-campus," said Father Ken Smith (left) and Pastor Robert Schmitt at noontime Bible study. Schmitt. In order to accomplish this, he is inviting students to become active in his church at Spring and Unions Streets in Middletown. "It can be tough as a student to be involved in a congregation as a single person," said Schmitt. However, Schmidt said St. Peter's has been very good in welcoming students into the congregation, making them feel comfortable and in some instances transporting students to the church. Schmitt encourages students to contact him and express their desire for worship and fellowship ideas. "Right now, I am waiting for student response." In addition to providing religious guidance, Schmitt said he is available for personal counseling, and can be reached by calling the church at 944-4651 or his home at 944-7434. Schmitt's campus ministry background has been developing since 1979, when he was a student at University of Maryland. In addition, he is a past president of Mid-Atlantic Student Movement and a member of the Commission on Higher Education. "I'm not just a Lutheran's pastor even though I am a Lutheran pastor said Schmitt about his attempt to provide a Pan-Protestant approach to campus ministry. ....:.:. ......... iiiiiiiiiiiii..i,:iii:ii,K,K:iiii*iww.:ii!*,:::4,..::•:l:•::....::i7ri:i•i:iSi::iii:i:ii:i*,::::::::::•:•:•:•...:xx- :$ :•:::: :: Vitiiptotiiitzlik i.. t'iiii 6ol . 3 g-. 4igi§iiiii::•i:x mitititeiditi e 1 ii_.: , •:.:::iii:::::::.:.: , •: ,. ...:: . ...v . : 94..,m4 ; ,..e.: iii.v . : :.•_ : • : ..... :4:: . : :n.::Appoolv iii d •iiipoi4.w::•:::::::•:::::::,•-•::.....i,::iii:: i:::§qos - Oppl i i i i .•••••i*i......:•:•:*::::*•:•:„.::::•......:.....i.tt.t.wv.---,••••••••:••,••"::_•••:•:::::::::::::ii*:,.K: if: ii•iiiefiti rti:::i::::::::::::*•::::m .. : .....imatitabießatra:::: •:Mii,,i::::•:ll..iii:.: ~.,,i•.:........M::::•ii...:.• ••• . f ..l.gliblVditiettg ::::::: Mi i imF FW.:moiitgailati .::i:.:iiiii;:ii gifigiggPfiiAMPFPßlVAtet**iii!iiii:: ••—•.:•:,:::::::::::.:0:::::::K..... •puwwwwi,iia,_*:.::t.,,,:*i:ioi:: ••• • • • ••••••• ••:,.....::::,:::•• if..::*•:•ff - ••:Jr;•••:•7•2 .... wft i p tu•••••=.. ........„.....,:::::::.::::.:::::•.:-.:::, ''''' • Couittyumnisum2'sart.eltcmd iiiiiiikamitowisokormftosis on i, milawoosigglogooftgitcimPopplygi i p i l i #tsllßliNflft gginigaigillho.llCCOMlQUOlMWßA m ........-+••••••• •••••• • ••• • jAMM. o • . • - ".: , :•:•: , ..: ; :- : : : : : : : : : :•:*: . *• s ;: s rqi i i i i i i i i... 1ii:m.,:a.:„.:•:•,..,,H , :...,......,,,,,i4,: : : : : : ::that,:::::::00::::::i:!* •-‘4.... $ .• • ..: • ••• ......,,,:•:•::::::•:•:::::::::::::::**::::::::::: '''. &mho . • .., t.,44.W.,••••••:.:•:.:•:.:•:••.•:•.:•:•:.:•:•::::::•:,:•:•::::::•:•:•,,,,....:::::::: . 4•,:...,:.....3:::::::::::4t1,:i*i:K:::::iiii.,:.*::,,,,i* : : : : ::it . w . ::: , :ratnn .. v . v .-... .iotswev wvi t::::::-: : -: : .: • • ::•:,.....:ii...:i:i::ir,::.:-1:•;...i.......:•::::.iiii::::,,:.'riiiff.:'":":•:*:•.'• entatillentiMe.b:i . *.i:..catialet4, fk • m..: ., :i . . :. :.:i •. .i:ii.:.i . :::::iiiiigoiiiima i ms : : :manNi;iiiifg::: i4 P "iii i oo . l ''Olg i . i i : g.MUiiiii : :iii.l]i;iii : :ilMiiilagliii , iiirAn q.Yiii]:iM:::::iiiii:•:-.•.:,:siii:t 11::.:::i*??A.f.'4iiiigi.iiiififitiitimANmi RSo's,:::::':iiht"':'":'':::;'"PA4(jliiiii.attl,,QlMi:ii:.::i:: Celebrate Tradition With a Balfour Class Ring! ESCORT SERVICE PROPOSED TO BE EXTENDED ::~:» By Bernie Mixon When I was elected to the position of Junior Senator-at-Large, I made a promise to try to improve conditions on campus as they are needed. I intend to keep this promise. Now is such a time to make a change in a service provided by Police Services. Since the nation switched from Eastern Daylight Time to Eastern Stan dard Time, it has been getting pro gressively darker and hence the need for the Escort Service to extend its hours from 5:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. instead of the present arrangement of 7:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. A sign-up sheet can be found in Room 212, Olmsted. If enough in terest can be drummed up, then the change can be. made. But I need your help. The sign-up sheets will be made available from Nov. 18-Nov. 25. New Course Offered During the Spring 1988 semester, a new course in physics will be offered for the first time. The course is entitled "Intro ductory Physics" (CPHYS 497 A) and will meet on Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:15 pm. The course is intended for students not in science or technology pro grams. Only algebra will be needed. The course is an introduction to the methods and results of classical and modern physics. It should be of interest to thought ful students who would like to know more about the physical world around us. Further information can be ob tained from Dr. Miller in 125 STL.
