Page 8 Letters to the Editor Basketball Fever... Catch It!!! To The Editor: Hey students, faculty, administration, staff and community... There's a new excitement here at Penn State, Harrisburg. After years of a on again, off-again nobly played but unsuccessful basketball program, this year's 1986-87 Capital College Lions are playing like a team possessed with a 6-1 (at this writing) record and three games scoring over 100 points. The basketball action is fast, balanced, intelligent and successful. What's Disagrees That Administrative Staff Rude Dear Editor: A recent letter in the paper commented on the "...rudeness, impoliteness, and insensitivity of some of the secretarial staff..." The writer indicated that she surveyed these "...poor attitudes...." with about 50 students and over half of those surveyed "...encountered unnecessary and undeserving Vvat&sYup or rudeness..." from some of the administrative employees in the Olmsted Building. As a' "walk-on" graduate student since August, 1982, at this university, I have had many an opportunity to observe and evaluate its employees. Therefore, 1 must write a defense of these employees because in over four years of seeking out answers to questions I have not encountered the "...extremely poor attitudes..." complained about in the recent letter. My Staff is courteous, Helpful Dear Editor: This is a reply to the letter written by Christine Collins, full-time student, which was printed in the December 10 issue of the Capital Times. I am a returning full time student in the Humanities Program and I don't feel that I suffer fools any more gladly than I did when I was younger. I have had occasion during the first semester of my Junior year to use the services of nearly all of the administrative offices in the Olmsted Building. I find the employees, both male and female, helpful and mannerly. In fact, they have gone out of their way to explain and/or to refer me to the proper office. even more gratifying is that our players are student/athletes and not athlete/students. We have no athletic scholarships, so these kids are really putting out!!! Under new head coach Brian Gauger (a veteran of the lean roundball years), every player is contributing to this year's successful effort. What makes matters even more exciting is that most of the team are juniors and will be back next year. Gang, the price is right all home games are free!! Commuters, bring your family and friends. Faculty, come and personal experiences, as well as other students I have talked to, has been one of positive vibrations from these same employees. Also I must raise the question about the validity of the writer's survey. Is her sample student group (50 students) a true representative sample of the student population at this university? After all, there were over 3,000 students enrolled at this school in the Fall Semester, 1986. In closing, let me cite one small example of the helpful, courteous, and friendly service I recently received from some of the employees of the Heindel Library over a 72 hour period of time. On a Saturday near the end of the Fall, 1986 term, I went to check out a book for use in a research paper due by the end of the week. Having discovered the book was not on the shelf, I went to the circulation desk for assistance. The clerk checked the I sincerely hope that you receive a number of letters questioning this unfortunate attitude of Miss Collins. There are unanswered questions that occur to me, such as, what is her major, and what small town does she come from? Sincerely, Jean Eileen Witthoft Capital Times unwind with the students. The clerk promised to write a note to her supervisor asking her for assistance in locating the missing book. The clerk took my phone number and said that her supervisor would be contacting me on Monday. On Monday afternoon, I received a call from the librarian who informed me that the book had been found and was now available for my use. This "service with a smile" attitude has been my personal experiences in the four years as a student at this university. I feel the administrative staff has been unfairly maligned by the recent letter. Thank you for this opportunity to express my feelings. Sincerely, Bill Eason Inmate Requests Letters Dear Editor: Although I am aware that your campus newspaper may only be available to those who attend your campus I am still corresponding in hopes you will publish this in your next issue.
