The major part of the
Ben Franklin program is the
"challenge grant" program.
These projects are funded at four
advanced technology centers
throughout the state:
—University City Science Center
in Philadelphia
--Lehigh University
Bethlehem
State funding for the
1986-87 fiscal year is $2645
million. This is matched by
$lOB million in private
university and other funds. This
makes it the largest state
sponsored economic development
program in the country. There
are 482 projects for fiscal year
1986-87 at the four advanced
technology center.

satellite center here on campus is
Lewis Attardo. His office is
located in the CRAGS building.

There are three kinds of
projects carried on by the centers.
The most common are joint
research and development
involving the universities and
private companies. These
account for approximately one
half of the the budget. The
second type is entrepreneurial
assistance projects which account
for approximately one quarter of

the budget. These are projects
that assist small companies in a
variety of ways such as writing
business plans, finding financing
or renting space in a busines
incubator. The third type of
project, which also accounts for
the remaining quarter of the
budget is education and training
projects. These are projects to
provide employment training and
often involve community
colleges.
