Kirby hopes to place 650 students this year, up from 520 a year ago. "We register about 2,000 students yearly," adds Marilyn Perry of Brigham Young's co op education office. "Sometimes there are more students than openings. But, while we still.do some looking for positions, more and more companies are coming to us with positions. And placements are definitely up." The economic upswing also is providing an abundance of internships for North Texas State students, especially in "high tech" industries, says NTS program director Diane Altenloh. "Jobs are booming in this area," she maintains. "And we're close enough to Dallas/ Fort Worth that we can place our students there, too." And Illinois State University reports a growing number of employers are recruiting students from cooperative education, then hiring them upon graduation. "It's not guaranteed," ex plains Bill Kirk, engineering supervisor at Monsanto's East St. Louis, 111., plant, which takes on "two or three" engineering students a semester. Michalsky The new storm windows recently installed in the first floor of the dorms cost more than $ll,OOO according to Housing Supervisor Frank Williams. These new, aluminum-framed windows replace the old, wooden-framed storm windows. New storm windows for the second and third floors may be installed as early as next year, Williams said. The windows from the first floor are still usable and have already replac ed some of the old windows on the second and third floors, he added. Williams said the Maintenance and Operations Department seeks to upgrade or replace certain components of the residence halls every year. He also cited the new carpeting and furniture installed in the past two years as examples of recent renovations. Williams said students should contact him when ques tions or problems arise concer ning the maintenance and upkeep of the residence halls, University Apartments and Meade Heights. 2.40 3.40 2.65 3.65 2.40 3.40 2.65 3.65 2.40 3.40 2.65 3.65 3.25 4.25 1.70 1.15
